Other than having heard of the ubiquitous online encyclopedia, "Wikipedia", many people may not know that a wiki- a web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections- is a powerful tool that is radically changing the social, educational and business climate. Brian Chatfield's Complete Guide to WIKIS is a no-nonsense, clearly written handbook to understanding what the increasing use of wikis means in terms of how information is gathered and recorded, and how to harness and utilize that power for education, business, and personal growth.

Chatfield writes intelligently, but avoids the technical jargon that can confuse what are straightforward concepts. Chapters include case studies taken from successful, well-known wikis, (Wikipedia, Baseball Reference Bullpen, Ganfyd, Project Backpack, Sourcewatch, Curriki) providing wiki novices with an introduction to wiki types, history and applications, their proliferation, and concise instruction on how first to edit and then create project-specific wikis. The Complete Guide to Wikis: My Review

I've realized the usefulness of wikis over the years, but, to be honest, they have stumped me. So, I'm glad I picked up The Complete Guide to Wikis. This book covers everything from the history of wikis, how to start and maintain a wiki and tips on how to use a wiki for specific groups of people like teachers and family members.
I have very little coding knowledge, so I love the fact that this book teaches you wiki formatting coding, which is the biggest part that intimidated me. It is laid out in very simple terms that even I can understand.
The best part of the book, though, was the part about using security on your wiki to prevent people from vandalizing entries. The fact that vandals can come in and mess up a wiki always bothered me. It's good to know that there are ways to prevent it.
After reading this book I feel like I can use a wiki successfully for wide range of purposes. I can even properly add entries to Wikipedia subjects that interest me, which is fantastic.

Good for what it is, but zero code

265 pages of very large type, all prose, no code. OK for a VERY rudimentary intro to wikis, useless if you want to do something VERY basic, like set permissions.

Much better are: Wikis For Dummies, Mediawiki (Wikipedia and Beyond), and best and most current and useful of all: Working with MediaWiki.

IF YOU HAVE GOTTEN this book or another similar book (use Amazon's keyword: MediaWiki) on creating wikis, and you're at the point where you want to edit and code in earnest, the fastest, cheapest way to do so is to go to Wikipedia, then search the term Wiki markup (that is what Wikimedia and MediaWiki, the parent and free software company of Wikipedia, calls the Wiki editing language). That article is a "how to" of details on all the edit commands, which you'll need as soon as you've got your wiki up and running with the help of whichever book you decide on here.

An Inspirational Book

Even after 55 years, these lines of verse are applicable to today's times of anxiety and doubt. Veal chronicles how dub music progressed from remixing and altering existing reggae recordings to studio-creating original songs out of music samples, noise, and found sounds. Inventing and developing techniques with effects similar to what turntable scratching and sampling later achieved, Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and others paved the way for rap by placing the boasting of "toasters" over bass-heavy charts and fractured soundscapes. Veal traces the development of the drum-and-bass sound central to reggae and dub, noting that "sonically and aesthetically, musicians like DJ Kool Herc," often called the progenitor of rap, "essentially transplanted the Jamaican sound system model" to the Bronx, where it was finally distilled into rap. Drawing on interviews with dub pioneers DJ and producer-recording artist Mikey Dread, Veal posits that dub and hip-hop are "deconstructive compositional strategies" that sensitize "listeners to the microaesthetics of production." While there may be some readers grumbling about the author's 'dryness' in this volume, I found it to be a unique and invaluable resource in bringing out many heretofore unknown details of dub production techniques from some of its most revered protagonists.

This book authoritatively helps frame Dub in the greater context of Jamaica's musical and cultural landscape in the second half of the twentieth century, with unique innovations which some would argue has had an immense but vastly under-appreciated impact on the rest of the planet's musical development up to this very moment. The author has managed to provide studio rats such as myself with the luxurious wealth of information that -short of being having been there- some of us had been looking for since first hearing some of these recordings more than a quarter of a century ago, and as such is an invaluable addition to any dub creator's tolbox.

The minute and precise details in which some of this is recounted is a unique asset in helping preserve what has up to now been nothing but soon-to-be-gone and more often than not distorted oral tradition, and its many direct quotes from those key players still alive today will make it a solid historical reference point for those planning to further study this subject for years to come!

It is also welcome and refreshing to read such an account from the writer's African-American perspective, as it brings up many crucial facets of Jamaican music and culture into a sorely needed focus, which up to now has been the province of either ethnomusicologists who for the most part somewhat missed the point, or enthusiasts without the necessary research background and clarity of expression to bring it all together.

There are very few books that arguably helped change one's life. In my case, this is most definitely one of them. It comes with my highest recommendation.

Imaginative Work on a Revolutionary Musical Form

A book like this is long overdue. The simple fact that it was published makes it good. Of the two most important strains of contemporary black music, hip-hop has generated thousands of books and articles, but dub has been largely ignored by the ethno-musicological world.

Dub - Soundscapes And Shattered Songs In Jamaican Reggae by Yale ethnomusicologist Michael E. Veal, is a scholarly work, but don't let that scare you. I know some of you might dislike the book because of its somewhat academic tone, scoff at many of its themes and find them pretentious, but I strongly disagree. This is a terrific analysis. Prof. Veal examines dub in a variety of contexts not only as an expression of Afro-Caribbean culture and the Jamaican music business but as an art form and creative process comparable to just about every modern, futurist and post-modern movement from dada and surrealism to conceptual art, from Luigi Russolo and John Cage to its influence on hip-hop and worldwide dance-pop culture.

It's not all dry, academic stuff. The man knows, and more importantly, loves his dub music. First, Prof. Veal shows us his dub credentials by going into detail about Jamaican music. But instead of the more familiar reggae legends about impoverished young ghetto singers and gun-toting producers, Veal's emphasis here is on recording studios, audio equipment, and the engineers themselves. After all, dub mixed at the various studios sounded the way it did because of the improvised, often homemade technology the early reggae engineers used. Syd Bucknor, Sylvan Morris, Graeme Goodall and Byron Smith are all mentioned, moving on to Tubby, Errol ET Thompson at Randy's, Channel One etc. There's a lot of interesting information about how JA studios developed during the late 60s and 70s.

Veal also compares dub with rock psychedelia and the use of ganja, but also notes that many of the most famous dub originators didn't smoke (Tubby and ET, for example) and while some reggae figures insist dub is not "ganja" music, others insist it most certainly is. Dub can be seen as similar to psychedelia's liberation from sonic slavery, but it seems unlikely that Jamaican engineers were listening to Pink Floyd's Ummagumma. On the other hand, a certain amount of psychedelia's production techniques like echo/delay and phase shifting made their way into some American R&B and Soul records of the late 60's and early 70's, which have some rather proto-dubby-sounding parts. These records would've been familiar to Jamaican musicians at the same time dub began to appear, and are likely to have influenced them.

Prof. Veal conducted dozens of recent interviews with various figures connected with dub's 70's heyday. "Fortunate survivors" would perhaps be a more accurate way of describing them, given the all too common murders and early deaths which are a tragic fact of life in JA. The dark, moody and aggressive nature of much dub is also considered as a reflection of the crime and violence in Kingston's ghettoes. These interviews contain a wealth of comments which help shed new light on the development of dub. Sadly, the fact that a book on dub has taken 30 years to appear means that King Tubby and several others aren't around to offer their comments

Then, he takes us through a few carefully analyzed mixes by various engineers. It's good to see others besides Tubby and Scratch getting their due credit. Here, Prof. Veal shows us he really listens to this stuff like a truly obsessed fan. Starting with some late 60's Studio One productions, he describes the recordings in great detail, noting the peculiarities of the mixes, instrument placement, sound quality and tape hiss. He describes how the mixes were done based on his interviews with the engineers, what key the tunes were played in, how echoed/delayed chords and vocals create strange rhythmic and harmonic juxtapositions, even noting the echo/delay rates used, the qualities of various types of reverb equipment, and how the signal path through the mixing board created certain sounds. There's a lot of interesting comments by the engineers; Jammy says his best mix ever was "Jammy's A Shine", his powerful, mind-blowing dub of Ronnie Davis' cover of the Wailer's "Sun Is Shining" produced by Bunny Lee around 1977-78. "That record mash up Jamaica and England and Europe and them places completely!" says Jammy.

Professor Veal explores the concept of dub as a process rather than product, which transforms the "truth" and "reality" of a normal reggae tune, its sounds unfolding and being turned inside out in the mix, causing the listener to question the authority of their preconceived notions. This was similar to the goal of dada/surrealism (to take one example) and thus dub can be considered to be part of the 20th century's avant-garde tradition. Many of the themes have been briefly discussed by music critics in the pages of The Wire and the liner notes to the Macro Dub Infection compilations for instance, but Veal devotes 300 plus pages to it, and expands on dozens of the same thoughts and feelings about dub as I (and others) have had for these last 25 years. Slavery and colonialism, the Afro-futurist sonic sci-fi of Sun Ra and Lee Perry, class and race issues, technology and information, all get name checked. The fact that Veal's themes are sprawling yet coherent demonstrates the importance of this music.

I've always felt it is probably one of the most revolutionary developments in late 20th century "pop", and Veal also touches on this line of reasoning. Dub radically subverts traditional structures of harmony, rhythm and composition. Dub disrespectfully ignores the notion that every recording of a musical performance is sacred and must not be technologically tampered with because it destroys the integrity and authenticity of the musicians' "artistic expression" as caught on tape. The implications of this subverts the idea that a piece of music (or any art) is "complete" in only one, final form, as intended by its "creator", and ignores ownership and copyright issues. Thus it can be compared to such figures such as Cage, Stockhausen, Warhol, Duchamp, Derrida, Deleuze and Guatarri, post-structuralism and deconstructionism (etc bla bla bla). Dub wallows in gimmicky, anti-musical sound, using echo, fade-ins and outs and other sound effects in totally inappropriate ways which an "authentic" "serious" musician would find absolutely appalling. It not only re-mixes, but it re-thinks, ignores, or gleefully violates practically every rule in the book. The same things were said about bebop back in the 40's, but ironically it is often the jazz purists who loathe musical developments like dub and hip-hop. Like the use of sampling, dub's entire assault on musical convention infuriates traditional, conservative musicians, and on balance, this is certainly a good thing. That's what makes dub so innovative and important, and of course so much fun.

These days, when there are so many people creating what Adrian Sherwood calls "designer dub" - a reggae composition intended to be "dubby" from the start, Veal reminds us that "dub" cannot really exist without a "vocal" version to compare it with - dub is a process of transformation. That's what makes dub so powerful. It's far more dramatic when you hear the vocal followed by the dub (or perhaps vice-versa). A "dub" tune by itself may sound good on its own terms, but it will be far more thrilling when heard in contrast to its traditionally-mixed vocal cut. Obviously, the 12" and "showcase" LP are the ideal formats for this.

I'm really impressed with this book, and it's about time someone from the academic world gave dub some serious consideration as a major, influential musical art form.

Great resource for musicians, producers and students of popular culture

This is a book written by an academic, but it has applications for anyone interested in this kind of music. After covering the development of modern Jamaican music from independence in 1962 on, he devotes a lot of space to analysis of the different recording strategies used by most of the well-known originators of dub and breaks down individual tracks in some detail, even detailing the specific equipment used by many producers. As someone who records and mixes my own music I found this kind of information really useful and inspiring and it has already caused me to question some of my own creative strategies and techniques. The second half of the book looks at the music in its political and historical context and follows the influences of dub in modern music. A book like this has long been called for. I remember the frustration of talking to young DJs who were all about 'dub' but actually didn't even know the music had originated in Jamaica. Dub was an extraordinary moment in modern music and deserves the seriousness of this treatment. One presumes that had this music originated in Europe they would be devoting university courses to it. Some readers may find the second half of the book a bit dense, but I loved all of it.

Medieval Catholic German Mysticism at its best.

This is not for everyone. The language is a bit flowery and archaic. The author assumes knowledge of the faith as he was writing more for monks than the general public. However, if you are willing to sit down and engage in Lectio Divino with this work you will be amply rewarded. Patience wins all. Committing oneself into the hands of God and seeking His guidance while thoughtfully mulling each chapter is the way to read this book.

About the Author
J.B. Bernstein is the cofounder and president of Access Group, an athlete management firm that has represented some of the greatest athletes of all time, including Barry Bonds, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith. Bernstein created the Million Dollar Arm contest in India, which yielded the first two Indian men to ever sign pro sports contracts in the US.

PROLOGUE

Their crisp white Million Dollar Arm uniforms gleaming in the bright Arizona sun, Rinku and Dinesh took the field. They had spent the last hour warming up inside the training facility, throwing 90-mile-per-hour fastballs that hit the catcher’s mitt with lots of mustard and a satisfying pop. They were locked in and ready to go. About to face a crowd of pro scouts, the two were far from finished projects, but to look at them, you’d never guess that just a year before, they had never touched a baseball. Hell, a year ago, they didn’t even know what a baseball was.

These two guys, who hailed from the kind of small, rural Indian villages where many people didn’t have indoor plumbing, running electricity, or opportunities for work, found themselves in Tempe that early-November morning to compete for a spot in the bigs. The experiment began a year earlier with a zany idea to canvass India, where baseball is virtually unknown, in search of raw pitching talent. Rinku and Dinesh were the winners of the nationwide contest and reality TV show. Now they were trying to make history as the first natives of India to become pro athletes in the United States.

The training facility where we were holding the tryout, housed in an ordinary office park adjacent to a strip mall, didn’t exactly look like the stuff of Cooperstown. But it was one of the top facilities in Arizona. Several office suites had been combined to create a beautiful, modern space with cold tubs for ice baths, workout equipment, an indoor pitching mound, and the like. Out the back door and across a parking lot was a strip of Astroturf with a pitching mound and pitching cage specifically designed for pitchers and hitters to train.

Behind home plate stood thirty stony-faced scouts. It was unbelievable, even surreal, how many scouts had turned out to see if Rinku and Dinesh could throw. These travel-hardened vets of the sport, who will look under any and every rock for the next megastar, couldn’t stay away from our tryout, no matter how ridiculous a long shot it was.

The scouts weren’t the only ones eager to discover whether baseball can be learned well enough in a year to play in the pros. A huge crowd of media—including ESPN, USA Today, and local reporters and TV crews—had assembled, which was very atypical. No one ever covers baseball tryouts. Even a crazy, once-in-a-generation high school recruit is a tough sell to an editor. But two guys who, if they didn’t do the impossible and land a spot on a baseball team, would be sent back to a life of hardship, at least by American standards? Well, that was newsworthy. Rinku’s and Dinesh’s tryout had all the melodrama and nail-biting potential heartbreak that make for an irresistible sports story.

When the time came to bring out Rinku and Dinesh, their pitching had been great, which wasn’t always the case. While both had big-league potential, their lightning-quick education meant that their deliveries could be erratic. Some days were good, some days not so much. We wanted them to warm up inside so that they would come out looking sharp. And, thank God, today their mechanics were laser-focused.

When Rinku; Dinesh; their pitching coach, Tom House; talent scout and trainer Ray Poitevint; my business partners Ash Vasudevan and Will Chang; and I walked out of the building in one badass line, it was like a scene from Reservoir Dogs. (Well, maybe more like the scene from Swingers where they imitate Reservoir Dogs.) As Coach House started to introduce the boys, smiling and thanking everyone for coming out to see this miracle of baseball, our mini-entourage was buzzing with nerves. I was so pumped; I couldn’t wait for them to get out on the mound. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that Rinku and Dinesh were going to nail this thing.

Dinesh was up first. The scouts, three deep, jostled one another and shoved their radar guns into place. (Scouts all bring their own guns, since they don’t trust anyone.) Dozens of barrels pointed at Dinesh as he trotted out to the mound.

I’d never been more excited about anything in mylife—and as a pro sports agent who had been in the businessfor more than twenty years, it took a lot to get meexcited. I had seen and done just about everything: drivenexpensive cars, flown on private jets, partied at the hottestnightclubs, dated the prettiest girls, and watched the

Super Bowl from the sidelines. But this was different. If Rinku and Dinesh showed the scouts the best they could do, it would change the courses of their lives and their families’ lives forever. It would also vindicate me after most of the sports community told me I was an idiot when I first came up with the idea.

I felt great. Success was assured. There wasn’t a hint that anything could go wrong—until someone pulled back the tarp that had been covering the mound. Suddenly, like a train wreck unfurling in slow motion, the entire situation went south. The mound, sandy, crumbling, and uneven, was totally messed up.

“Coach, mound no good,” Dinesh said.

The scouts, their guns raised in the air, waited. There was no time.

“You gotta go,” Coach House whispered loudly. “Just go!”

And just like when the guys left their villages back in India for a foreign land and a crazy dream, Dinesh took a major-league leap of faith, stepped up to the mound, and wound up for his first pitch.

"Million Dollar Arm" Inspires us to Find the Path to a Safer, Saner, More Humane World

I first learned of this story while watching the Disney film of the same name during my Christmas vacation in Cairo, Egypt. I was so moved by the film, I just had to read the book.

Even more powerful than the movie, this is the most inspirational story I've read this year, without any doubt. There is a common thread here in Egypt. Not with Cairo or urban Egypt, of course, but with the rural villagers of Upper Egypt.

I can well imagine a few of the Saidi (Upper Egypt peasant-class) behaving as Dinesh did with the toilet aboard the aircraft. Still further, when I began work in Cairo back in 1986, I was as fortunate to find an extremely honest, capable assistant as was Deepesh to Bernstein.

Of course, I was in a different field, and my circumstance is not especially relevant to this review.

My point is, perhaps Americans and all the world can learn so much simply by reading this book and taking to heart the essential lessons.

The vast majority of the population, at least in Third World countries, has more in common with Rinku, Dinesh and Deepesh than with us. J.B. Bernstein has, despite his many personal (and acknowledged) shortcomings, has hit upon some key points that we and our political (and business) leaders need to understand --- not all the world's people have dreams for there future or understand that they have, or can have, a role in developing a safer, saner, more humane civilization. They barely even can scratch out an existence. Yet, many of them, know more about 'family love' and respect and honor than most of us.

I so thoroughly enjoyed this story that I have purchased the Kindle book and the Audible book, and intend to buy the video when I return home next month.

What's more, I intend to purchase some paperback copies and mail them to some select friends and colleagues in the political world. I wish I could do more to advance what I regard as the most positive tool we can use to prevent our own self-destruction.

Bernstein, Deepesh, Dinesh and Rinku are bright stars illuminating the way to a better world.

This book is fantastic. I read it in only a few hours. I was so amazed as how these two young men from India learned English and also learned how to play baseball. I admire J.B. Bernstein for taking on the responsibility of living with these young men and guiding them as they learn how to play baseball in the US. These young men were so lucky to have an agent such as J.B. Bernstein. This man was willing to put his life on hold to make sure these two young men succeeded. Must read book. I am looking forward to the Disney movie which comes out in June. If you don't have a chance to read the book go see the movie.

Great Young Adult book

This book focuses on the life lessons learned by the sports agent as well as the two young men from India. When you are faced with an issue whether it be job related or personal, collaboration and problem solving skills are key as well as not fearing failure.
Some of the greatest achievements are made from mistakes that do not turn out as you expected.

The book says a lot of things you already know but don't really think about. The examples were quite helpful. When he explains the different types of bosses was superb, especially for people who haven't had much experience like me. It sheds a light on what to possibly expect.

Essential in your career

This books tells you very well the dos and don'ts of your career decisions. The concept of seeing an office like a town where gossip will determine your reputation is awesome and opens your eyes to stuff that you think shouldn't matter, but does matter a lot when other people decide if they promote you or not. Please read it before you do the stupid mistakes that bury your career in an office.
