A truly excellent program of sequential phonics instruction.

As soon as children know letter sounds, they can begin this sequential, six level program. Phonics skills are presented sequentially in the workbooks, beginning with short vowels and progressing to about a third grade reading level. The accompanying readers provide practice with each skill as soon as the appropriate workbook pages have been completed, so the child can actually READ the book. I have used this series as a crucial part of my Primary Learning Assistance reading program for about eight years, and cannot praise it highly enough.

Great for BEGINNING READERS

I learned to read with this book. (I was three years old. It works -- what else can I say?) My sisters learned to read with this series. I've used it with other beginning readers. IT WORKS.
The simple line art drawings are easy to understand. The simplicity keeps your attention focused on the words. The type is a good size for little kids, and the font exactly matches how you print the letters.
After you fill in the blanks, you get to color the pictures, which has the effect of making you review the page again.
(I recommend that you have a set of eight basic crayons for use with the book so that the child can compare the word "green" on the page to the word "green" on the crayon label -- especially for boys, as they have a higher risk of being partly color-blind.)
The usual recommendation is that the child should only do one page or a couple of pages a day, as this is more effective for retaining and applying the principles behind reading.
Placement tip: If the child easily and rapidly completes the first five pages, turn to the middle or the last few pages in the book, and if they can read them, then it's time to move them up to the next book.
It's important to remember that this is designed for LITTLE KIDS -- people for whom the research has demonstrated that printing letters neatly is a significant, multi-step cognitive task.
Adults will find it simplistic and boring. It's not printed in vivid colors. It doesn't have flashing lights. It doesn't make sounds, and you can't click on anything.
But if your goal is READING instead of entertainment, then IT WORKS.
There is a "consonant book" that can precede this one if the student has very little knowledge of letters and the sounds they make. It's often better to offer something just a little too easy at first instead of something frustrating. If it turns out that it's really too easy, then the child has earned the right to be moved up to the next book without being forced to complete the first one (unless they just want to).

Riveting romance, remarkable characters, honest and expressive writing

BE NOT AFRAID is a riveting multicultural romance set during the Revolutionary War. Elijah, a slave fighting for the Continental Army on behalf of his master, is separated from his regiment in Brooklyn, where he sees a black American woman stab a British officer. Kate had chosen to side with the British because she had been promised freedom after serving the Crown.

Despite being enemies, they are mutually attracted to each other. Kate's instincts and personal experiences tell her that Elijah is a good man. Kate is haunted by painful memories and has learned to do everything she can to survive. Elijah perceives that she has been hardened by her experiences, sees through her bravado, and admires her toughness. They believe in different paths to freedom, though. Kate doesn't understand why Elijah has chosen to fight for the colonies, which continues to enslave black Americans, while Elijah believes in the cause and has his own reasons for being loyal to his master.

When the British soldiers come upon them, Elijah takes responsibility for murdering the officer and is taken prisoner. Kate is both grateful but pragmatic. In her experience, men are motivated by self-interest. At the camp, however, she begins to appreciate Elijah's kindnesses, and their relationship develops from mutual attraction to respect, desperate yearning, and love. As Elijah plots to escape and Kate prepares to board the ship to Great Britain, the lovers must choose whose side matters most to them and how much they're willing to risk for the chance at love, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness, not only for themselves but their people, too.

I cared about what would happen to Kate and Elijah, feared for their lives and safety until the very end, and rooted for their happy ending. Until I read this novella, I had never considered the kinds of choices African Americans would have faced during the Revolutionary War. How could they believe in a cause that couldn't guarantee them the same rights as white men? Why would they want to stay in the colonies? What does it mean that they claimed a country that enslaved them as their homeland? How many African Americans seized the opportunity to flee or chose the other side? It wasn't in my history lessons growing up, and it never occurred to me to wonder. I am glad that I read this story and that this story was told.

Elijah and Kate are remarkable, inspiring characters, who chose hope while living everyday with fear. I loved how Elijah valued and respected Kate's autonomy and choices.

The author's writing style is really quite lovely, honest, and expressive. While addressing harsh topics, the narration is frank and effective, rather than melodramatic. I loved the way Alyssa Cole described her characters both inside and out--brilliantly authentic.

"A gust of cold wind whipped across the marsh, knocking the woman's head back, and Elijah felt a tremor run through him that was entirely unrelated to the weather. Her kinky hair was cut short, exposing smooth dark skin pulled taut across high cheekbones and a proud forehead. Her eyes were narrowed and her full lips stretched into a grimace as she regarded the Redcoat who approached her. She was gorgeous in her fury.

"Kate, Elijah thought, feeling a strange throb of anger at the dull British name likely bestowed upon her by her owners, just as his had been. It in no way matched the woman before him."

Kate Foster's heart has been bruised by the deeds of a scared selfish man. Men also misused her when she was a slave. Then she meets Elijah Sutton. Elijah asks Kate if she trusts him. Her response, “No.” Kate's fearful heart begins to change as she interacts with Elijah. Kate learns she can trust and depend on Elijah. All I can say about Elijah is Wow. What a man, what a man! I like the way the author slowly allows us to see what hardened Kate's heart. I read this story in a collection of stories about the American Revolution and black Americans.

Splendid novella: romantic and realistic.

I love a historical romance that also teaches me something, and this certainly did. Elijah and Kate are wonderfully strong characters, and the Revolutionary War setting, in Brooklyn, is excellent.

I have read nearly every book on fractography and plastic failure analysis and can say this is the best combination of the two. Filled with photos and great explanations, the section on Defects and Damage is a masterpiece. It shows tons of photos with arrows and captions pointing directly to the defect along with clear explanations. The right way to write a book!
