David L. David Steiner is a clinical psychologist by training, and currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, both at McMaster University. David is a Senior Scientific Editor of Health Reports, and sits on the editorial boards of four other journals. He has written or edited 9 books, in the areas of statistics, epidemiology, public health, and measurement theory; and have published over 350 articles in these and other areas. David's main interests are quality of life in people with various medical conditions, scale development, research design, treatment of the homeless mentally ill, and woodworking.

A must read for people who want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior

If you want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior get this book. I have been doing biostatistics for a living for more than a dozen years and this book in its various forms has remained one of my favorites because of it's clear writing and spot on advice. Over the years countless doctors have proposed using an instrument they have created to assess response to a new treatment. This book covers exactly why that is two projects not one. Development/validation of the instrument is its own project. This book covers the statistics and methods used to properly assess the reliability and validity of new (or existing) instrument/test/scale with fantastically clear writing. There are many examples taken from medicine and a fair number coming from education and psychology. All are clearly explained.

There are no proofs or derivations in this book. Instead you will find basic algebra and worked examples for most of the statistics. All the coverage is good but one of the truly excellent features of this book is the coverage of intra-class correlation. Nobody has done a better job explaining ICCs.

Some of my students find Norman and Streiner's Biostatistics the Bare essentials hilarious others find it too wordy. While there are rare funny comments this book has been edited to be much more concise and not silly. So, while it is not mathematically rigorous, it is a serious book. While this is a statistics and methods book at it's core, the writing is accessible for anyone with a background in medicine, education or psychology, as well as people coming from mathematics who like clean prose.

While this book could be better (if it had a web supplement with detailed coverage of SAS and/or R) it is otherwise fantastic.

a young camel boy who aspires to the greatness of the greatest salesman in the world

What I find really interesting about this book is that its format allows you to project upon the character in the story, and follow along in the adventure as if you were Hafid, a young camel boy who aspires to the greatness of the greatest salesman in the world. I have just received this book in the mail and have reached the part about the first scroll, but so far I do find this approach very unique and I feel very involved within the task that is given to the young boy. I am really excited to experience practically the next year applying the principles within the book!

I haven't cheated and read ahead, but I will try to give an update in the next several months!

Writen in a simple, easy-to-read, fire-you-up style.

The Greatest Salesman in the World.

This is a little fable written in 1968 by Og Mandino. This was Og's first book. It sold millions of copies and established him as his era's most popular inspirational writer. Og went on to write another 14+ books and sold 15 million books or so over the span of his career.

Og reminds me of our era's most popular inspirational writer: Paulo Coelho. They both write in a simple, easy-to-read, fire-you-up style.

Whereas Coelho's Alchemist features a young shepherd pursuing his destiny, this classic features a young camel boy named Hafid pursuing his dream to follow in the footsteps of his master and become the greatest salesman in the world.

Og worked for W. Clement Stone's leading insurance company (and ran Success Unlimited-- the magazine started by Stone and Napoleon Hill), so the book was written to help salesman maximize their potential, but it's really a book about the core principles of success in general.

The wisdom in the book is delivered in ten "ancient scrolls"--each featuring a different piece to the puzzle.

Let's take a quick look at a handful of my favorite Ideas:

1. The 10 Scrolls - And their wisdom.
2. Obstacles Are Good - Let's *really* get that.
3. Form Good Habits - That's scroll #1.

I first read this when I was in 6th grade. My Dad gave me the book. Although I didn't read it on schedule like it says, I did make an attempt even back then and I really believe it made a big difference in how I interact with customers and people in general today. I've had a number of different employers over the years tell me that my customer service skills are excellent and seem ingrained in my psyche. Customer service is not something that everyone is good at, but the core skills of patience, listening, controlling emotion, laughing at ridiculous and rude customers (not in front of them obviously), are all traits that can be attributed back to what the scrolls teach and are traits that are common among people who have good customer service skills.

Two scrolls in particular really have helped me over the years, Greet this day with love in your heart and If you persist you will succeed. Greeting people with love has helped me tremendously in dealing with crabby, unruly customers. When I say I love you, in my head, even though sometimes it is hard to do, it keeps me grounded and able to listen to the rants of the customer but not take them personally and also helps me to look at the situation from their side.

My father used to buy this book by the case load (he literally bought over 20 cases) and hand them out to people telling them that if they read the book and follow the scrolls that their life will be changed forever. The repetition in reading the scrolls is key. I've read them so many times now that the principals just come naturally now and I find myself automatically responding to situations almost exactly like the scrolls say.

Some people say that they don't work in the sales field and so the book isn't relevant. In my opinion, this book is relevant to everyone, regardless of your career. Practically every situation, work, family, friends, etc you are selling something. Whether it's selling an idea, convincing a friend, spouse or child to do something, negotiating, interviewing for a job, etc. This is a book on how to live your life in general, not just how to be a better salesman.

You will not regret buying this book even if you just read it once. BUT if you can find the time and make it a habit to read the book as it instructs, your life will be changed forever.

Probably cheaper than printing out the website...

What I was hoping for in this book was a little better laid out and explained version of the tutorial from Arch's website. What I received is a verbatim printed version of the website in a pocket sized soft cover book. I wanted a printed version that I could follow along with, and had considered just printing the website in the first place. At least for $11 the book might have cost less than it would have to print out all those pages on my own. Ink is expensive! My biggest complain is that it really is word for word from the website. For example, the VERY FIRST PAGE has an underlined hyper-link to go for more info. Go ahead, try and click it... I dare you.

Read the WIKI it's basically ripped right from there, you could save yourself some money by printing the WIKI out, I knew what it was when I purchased the book I was just curious if anything useful was added but no straight rip off of the web pages .

Great for intermediate-advanced programmers

I was lucky to meet the author personally last week during the Web & PHP conference and attended one of his talks regarding this very same topic.

The thing that you should know before buying this book is that all the knowledge presented in it IS NOT in the php documentation. To write this book, the author has looked deep into PHP's C source code, so you will find a lot of insider info in this book. For example, there is a chapter that talks about how PHP handles arrays internally which is very detailed yet easily readable. A big plus comes from the fact that 99% of the SPL shown in the book has short and sweet code examples.

One good surprise about this book was the table on data structures' complexity. In this table you can see all the SPL data structures and the complexity to delete an element from the end, middle, for sequential and random reads. This helps immensely when choosing the right data structure for your needs. I don't think anyone has actually created such a comprehensive table like this for the PHP SPL data structures.

Having said all the above, this is not a book for beginners. By that I mean that, yes, a beginner will understand everything presented here as the complexity is not high and it is very well presented, but I doubt that a beginner will benefit from SPL right off the bat. Once you are comfortable with PHP, this book is an excellent resource to know all there is to know -literally- about the SPL.

This books explained all the SPL library, from data structures (and how they work) to iterators and others miscellaneous stuff (Interfaces, Exceptions).

Each chapter comes with simple exemple and some pragmatic tips to know why you should use or not use this or this (performance, complexity, etc..)

Well writen and explained this book is aimed to PHP developers who want to know deeper the SPL library with a better support (much more readable) than the official documentation (who stay essential).

On top of that there is a good introduction to algorithm complexity, what it is and why this is important to keep an eye on complexity (but not how to compute your algorithm complexity, that's not the subject of the book)

Finding this book finally brought an end to searching for a resource that combines instruction with beautiful photography and a wealth of small embroidery designs. If you're looking for something edgy and unusual, keep searching. The patterns in this book are classic and a thoughtful reminder of an era that created time for the pursuit of embellishing life with lovely needlework. I am motivated and inspired by what Vicki Haninger has presented in this book and thankful to her for the opportunity to learn from the projects and to find many ways to create with the designs.

If you like cute adorable stitcheries, well then you'll love this book. Page after page of sweet lil pic's that has inspired me stitch. This book is bringing the funk back into embroidery. It is jam packed with ideas and nearly all the designs in it are easy enough for beginners. Luckily for me I bought it for myself for Christmas and what a treat it is indeed. I havent got anything negative to say about the book, only you wont regret having one of these books in your collection to inspire you :-)

Devoted to the South, John Wilkes Booth had planned to kidnap Lincoln and hold him hostage, but when that plan did not materialize, he hatched his assassination plot. Co-conspirators in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia helped him escape and evade capture for 12 days before being surrounded in a barn and killed. Readers will be engrossed by the almost hour-by-hour search and by the many people who encountered the killer as he tried to escape. It is a tale of intrigue and an engrossing mystery. The intensity of the book was something I enjoyed. The book took us through the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and the capture of John Booth. From the shot to the capture, this book was so precise on the facts of the event. For example, on the same night of Lincoln’s assassination, Booth’s accomplices had plans to attack other state officials.
There are a few things I did not enjoy about this book. It was a little slow in the middle as Booth and his accomplice were siting in the woods. The story jumped around a little while they were transitioning characters, which could get a little confusing. Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable book.
If you like history, you would love this book. I am not big on history, but it kept me interested with all the action. Someone who enjoys thrillers or suspense, would also think it is great. People from 10 to 80 could find something interesting in the pages. I recommend it.

"Chasing Lincoln's Killer" was definitely a good book to read. Although there was a lot of people and it was confusing at first, I started to understand the the connection between them as the story moved on. This book gave me a lot of information on the assassination of President Lincoln and the manhunt of John Wilkes Booth and David Herold. This book was delivered promptly on the standard shipping (just a few days) and the book was described as (good) well it was delivered looking brand new and it was a hardcover for just $3.95! I will continue to order from this company, especially when my kids have a book then need asap for a school assignment. How to eat right all the time

Davis manages to transform a recipe book into a fascinating look into the biochemistry of food. Her books are the only comprehensive description I've ever found of practical nutrition, and this one is no exception. The technical information is made accessible and interesting, even for the general reader. The recipes are detailed, easy to use and often delicious when prepared to her instructions. Many of her ideas come from the great cooking traditions of the world. Her procedure for making soup stock, for example, is classically French a la Julia Child and just as practical. The difference here is that you'll know what makes soup stock incredibly delicious, highly nutritious and what your body does with it. Ever wonder why vegetables are easily overcooked? Davis explains the delicate enzymatic and structural changes that take place during cooking that can make broccoli either an appetizing green forest or a puddle of colorless goo. All of her main points are backed by journal research cited in bibliographical notes. Fascinating! Everyone should read these books!

I love this book as well as all of Adele Davis' books. She tells the truth which is like a breath of fresh air compared to some of the nutrition lies you read on the net and in some other so called self help books.
I will always stick with Adele Davis. A great lady who wrote honest books on nutrition. Big Pharma and the other rip offs hated her and it is no wonder. lol lol I love Adele, NONI juice, Biotin for my dog and myself and family, Organic dairy and food all of which I get from amazon. Oh! I almost forgot, I love amazon too.Thanks amazon.

If I had to get rid of all of my cookbooks but one, this is the one I'd keep!

This cookbook has serviced me well over the years. I had a paperback I bought new that finally fell apart, and I found a hard back at a yard sale for $3 so I was very happy.

It is full of useful information in understanding the healthier way to cook foods and why, with some good recipes. The information on roasting meats is worth the price of the book. This book started me on my path to healthier eating years ago, and I depend on it still for information.
