Beautiful

When Belle, a foster child, is being placed with Tess she's finally found a good home. Soon another child, Jim, joins them. Jim and Belle are best friends. They're so close and they love each other very much. When Jim's mother is able to take care of her son again they lose touch. After many years Jim comes back to Dublin to find Belle. They immediately reconnect and their love is deeper than ever.

Jim and Belle want to be foster parents themselves. Their door is always open for children who need them. When Belle has to say goodbye to a child she really loves she's going through a tough time. It's almost Christmas, but she isn't in the mood to celebrate. When she wishes she'd never been born something happens to her, something that will change her entire outlook on life...

Every Time a Bell Rings is beautiful in so many ways. Tess, Jim and Belle are wonderful people and they have such good hearts. I truly admire every loving and caring foster parent. I think it's fantastic that Carmel Harrington has chosen this as a topic for her book. It's definitely a topic that deserves some extra attention.

I love romantic stories, especially when true love is involved. This Christmas story is so special. I didn't want it to end and loved every word. Every Time a Bell Rings has a gorgeous cover. Both the outside and the inside of the book are filled with love and joy. It's exactly what a good Christmas book should be like. It has the right spirit and I really enjoyed the story. I was singing Christmas songs and I'm already in a Christmas mood just because of this book. I think Carmel Harrington is a great writer and I love her work.

A Warm, Witty Holiday Read. Recommended!

My first Christmas read of 2015 is Carmel Harrington's EVERY TIME A BELL RINGS. I was eager to read this book after having loved BEYOND GRACE'S RAINBOW and THIS LIFE YOU LEFT. On top of that, this novel is an homage to the film "It's a Wonderful Life," and I, like so many people, found the questions raised by that classic to be life-changers. Harrington skillfully borrows the envelope from the movie, while adding both a modern-day perspective and a woman's point of view.

I will admit that I had a bit of trepidation regarding the sometimes dark threads of the story. Since I've had kids, and experienced the loss of my mother, I'm not as tough as I used to be. I no longer read "children in peril" novels such as the ones I read when I was an English major. I assumed based on the film, that the end would be happy, and that ultimately the story would be uplifting. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that I was correct.

The story centers on Belle, a tossed-around, often-forgotten, bi-racial child of the foster care system whose longest-term relationships include a mother who never wanted to see her born, and a cold, clinical social worker named Mrs. O'Reilly. She trusts no one but the one constant in her life, her beloved doll Dee Dee. When we meet the young Belle, she has stopped speaking altogether. This is understandable as she is not used to "having a voice." She has never been allowed to make choices or have opinions, and saying what she thinks has never gotten her anywhere good.

Enter Tess, a veteran foster mother who understands broken children, but sees past the shards to their humanity. She allows Belle the space she needs, and offers her a safe haven. She intuits that what Belle needs, in addition to a real loving mother, is a friend who is made of flesh and blood, not plastic. She takes in Jim, a foster kid who faces the pain of his mother's mental illness. She loves him, but is incapable of caring for him, so Tess steps in to bridge the gap.

The three form a bond of family that is as strong as blood, and find comfort in one another. When Jim has to rejoin his birth mother, Belle tries hard to be happy for him, but it's another loss for which she doesn't have the strength. She and Tess manage to get through the pain, and Belle makes it to adulthood, buoyed up by her foster mother's (real mother's. actually, despite the accident of birth) wisdom, kindness, and practicality. I love the scenes between Belle and Tess when the roles reverse. Belle constantly tries to convince Tess to give up her sneaky cigarettes and eat a green vegetable or two instead of the fried food and chocolates she lives on. I love the fact that Tess is three-dimensional, and not a cookie-cutter saint. Her flaws add rich depth to her character.

Belle winds up married and happy with foster children of her own. She loves them all, but it's a girl with a doll who reminds her of herself who steals her heart completely. At the climax of the book, we relax, thinking that Belle finally has every piece of her dream in place: Money, Home, Husband, Children, Family, Pregnancy. When fate intervenes to challenge Belle, she is simply too tired to fight, and contemplates doing herself a harm by jumping off the very bridge in Dublin where she got engaged. (Wait till you read about her "ring.")

A little girl with qualities that Belle cannot fathom steps in to help Belle sift through the aspects of her life that she can't accept. She gets a supernatural lesson in the powers of goodness and love to triumph over pain, cruelty, and deprivation.

I'm writing this carefully to avoid spoilers, but I want to call out a particular character whom I loved named Bobby. A troubled older child,of the kind that don't always wind up with happy situations in foster care, is taken in by Belle and her husband. The boy turns into a man, and a good solid one at that, after being bolstered by the love of Belle and her husband under the guidance of "Grandma" Tess. I love how he turns out, because he's still a man of the streets, to an extent. While he has chosen light over dark, we can still see sly remnants of the tools he used as a survivor when he was a kid. I adore how multi-dimensional Bobby is.

I did cry many times while I read this book. And some scenes still haunt me. It's unimaginable that people can be cruel to children, but sadly, it's a part of many adults' experience. The compelling part of the story is to see how people can overcome their beginnings, and how little it can take to turn someone from the wrong path to the right.

The ending was perfect, and it was the HEA that my heart needed. When I shut down my Kindle, I lay in bed weeping on my pillow, but it was a good, clean kind of weeping. I had fully invested in Belle's tale, and I can move on knowing she's fine.

Extra stars for wit and humor, a great conversational tone, and a lovely portrait of Dublin. Recommended! (less)

Everyone needs a Nora in their life now and again

I felt as if Tess was the backbone of the story, perhaps even more so than Belle. She is the person who forms and loves the adult Belle grows up to be. Through all the disappointment, neglect and heartbreak Belle always has Tess holding her up and pushing her forward.
It must be incredibly hard for both foster parents and foster children to say goodbye when the children return to their parents, especially when they have managed to form a bond. Not all foster parents do it for the right reasons, but those who really care can change the lives of children in dire need of support and love.
Harrington draws upon the plot of It's a Wonderful Life quite a bit. In a way it makes the story seem more nostalgic. In essence the moral of the story is to acknowledge how lucky we are and to be happy for what we have instead of wanting what we might never be able to have.
I think we are all guilty from time to time of not being able to understand that we may be luckier than we think. Belle is stuck in her obsession of Lauren. The bond has grown into something that could be viewed as detrimental for a foster child, who eventually has to return to their biological parents.
Someone needs to remind Belle or make her aware of what is really important. What her life would be like without certain people in her life, and if she hadn't been part of their lives either. Harrington has created a Christmas story that leaves the reader with plenty to think about.

Excited to read, but then disappointed

I have loved every Brad Meltzer book that I have read. So when I saw this on pre-publication I ordered it. I was excited when it was delivered and got to it as soon as I could.

It is a conspiracy theorist book working two secret groups against each other. The first group, is a group founded by George Washington who wanted a group that would protect the Presidency of the United States. Not necessarily protect the President, but protect the institution of the Presidency. The other group is a secret society that came together to eliminate certain Presidents that were causing division in the country, mainly division through their attitudes towards the Church.

So, here we are, one group wanting to bring the fifth assassination of a President because the current President wants to unite all religions together and be tolerant and this group thinks that is an Abomination against The Lord. The other group wants to thwart this attempted assassination so that the Institution of the Presidency is not sullied by another death.

So, this is a conspiracy theory book that weaves a good story. I did think the plot was well conceived and that it did develop throughout the book. BUT, and this is a big BUT, I think that the book jerked too much back and forth from one group to another from the present to the past and kept mentioning things that seemed to have no connection truly to the story.

I will admit that Meltzer drew his characters in such a way that you thought you knew who the bad guy was but then started to question that thought and eventually you were either proven right or wrong, mostly wrong.

So, the book kept my attention, but the first half was so jerky that I had to really concentrate to finally figure out the writing style. After that it became a bit clearly and the plot started to develop.

So, I liked the book, but I can't give it a rave review because it was difficult to read, follow and digest for a good portion of the book.

So, if you are a Meltzer fan go ahead and buy the book but beware that it will be a bit harder to get into than some of his other books.

Stops and starts

Tremendously interesting theme, but too many possible alternatives without a clear direction for the main character who just seems to stumble upon the correct course of action by happenstance thereby stretching the limits of credibility in the outcome. No one can be so obtuse and effective except the character of Beecher White. The overabundance of plot within plot sometimes makes the story too convoluted and detracts from the storyline.

All in all Meltzer does write a compelling story albeit difficult one to slog through, and finally leaves the reader on a very perilous cliff hanger to whet our appetite for the next chapter in Beecher White's progression as a member of the Culper Circle.

Beecher White's further adventures

This book is the sequel to the author's "The Inner Circle", and retains most of the characters from that book. Once again our hero, Beecher White, an archivist at the National Archives in Washington (and the newest member of the Culper Ring) is thrust into the middle of some serious doings.

Ministers of churches often visited by presidents are being murdered in what appears to be an attempt at recreating the assassinations of the four presidents who were killed. Oddly enough, the murderer wears a plastic mask copied from Abraham Lincoln's likeness. Old friends, and enemies both old and new, fill these pages with surprises and suspense. Will Beecher and his cohorts in the Culper Ring be able to solve these murders before the sitting president, no friend of Beecher's, is assassinated? Also, who is this murderer who considers himself the latest member of the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret society that existed during (and after) the Civil War.

Complicating matters is the reappearance of Clementine, Beecher's first love and a strange character whose loyalties always seem to be questionable. Of course, there is Clementine's father, the hospitalized psychopath and killer Nico, who appears to have some connection to these murders. To these folks is added Marshall Lusk, a badly disfigured burn victim who was once abandoned by Beecher when he needed help, and which led to some dire consequences for several people. For whom is Marshall working, and could he be the Knight?

The questions and suspense go on and on, pulling the reader ever deeper into a complex mystery that may or may not have been resolved by the end of the book. To that end, I'm quite happy to look forward to the next installment of Beecher White's life and troubles.

Fun, attractive, but too expensive.

I'm a little disappointed by this, it certainly doesn't feel like $20 worth of adventure. This print-on-demand book is noticeably thin with four entirely blank pages in the back, with several more pages of full page ads, credits and poorly copy/pasted license boilerplate taking up even more of the 28 total pages. There's really only 19 pages of actual content to this adventure.

The adventure itself seems fun. There's a lot of story leading up to the main dungeon which was entertaining to read. A neat twist to the dungeon is the concept of limited air! Every step of the way has special rules for how to handle the limited time the adventurers will have due to losing air by taking too long to search or making poor decisions like setting off a fireball to burn away what little air is left for them. Bookkeeping for this system might get a little cumbersome, but it looks like a really entertaining challenge. There are several subtle things the players will need to look for throughout or pay the price. Unfortunately for them these are not things you normally think about, very clever! Each room seems to have devious traps and challenges which will make the players have to think in order to succeed.

The art within is high quality and full color, with lots of little side bars and flavor images to set the scene. Page layout is nice as well with easy to read and pleasant fonts, an attractive page border and a cream with watermark background -- all full color as well. The cartography is well done but in some ways confusing with no overall dungeon map, only five 1-2 room small but lovely battlemaps (with one part entirely missing - an area which you roleplay your way through rather than map it) and a regional map which, while half page and beautiful, is extremely difficult to read the labels on and doesn't show the actual location of the adventure from what I could see.

I believe there is some missing content as well, since there's a reference to pregenerated characters but none are included with the adventure. Adding in the pregens and including a PDF copy of this adventure might add some value to this, but as it is a $20 price seems quite high for what you get - especially considering you can get a 96 page hardcover adventure like Hoard of the Dragon Queen for $2 more.

Its a print on demand version of one of the better 5E events from last year's GEN CON. I do not have the Midgard/Southlands setting materials, but there is no difficulty in using the adventure in any campaign setting that would contain Egyptian style ruins. The main stand out feature is the time limit factor, as most of the adventure occurs with the PC's running out of air. The premise is used in several creative ways, but may be problematic for using in an ongoing campaign since it ups the chances of a TPK. I did not have a problem with missing content. I haven't run it for my group yet, but I think it will take up about two full sessions to get through. I played it at GEN CON and it was a blast, but we did not finish everything in the 4-5 hour window. The price may be high for the volume of what there is, but there's quality artwork and maps and there are several unique twists and challenges.

Great update to a classic bible reference and study book. Much better paper, and updated images with color illustrations.

From the description, I really could not tell how this was different from the "classic" edition of the book. It seemed the content was the same, but this had "color" illustrations. I was not sure what that would look like. The "classic" version that I already have has fairly crude drawings of maps, and some of the black and white photos were printed with such high contrast, that it was hard to make out the details of the images. This deluxe edition is really much better than the classic version. The paper is much more substantial and the photos are mostly new, and the color and exposure are really quite good. The maps have been updated, and a lot of the photos have been replaced with updated versions. Although it is hard to tell from the photo, this book is about an inch larger in the long axis and about 3/4" longer from side to side. It is also thicker, most likely from the better paper. I have only glanced through to text, and it seems to be mostly about the same (which is fine - this was always a very good reference book). The price difference between the "classic" and the "deluxe" is not prohibitive, and so I would recommend the deluxe version for anyone considering this book. I bought this as a gift, and in the future, would probably only buy the deluxe version.

One of the best Bible and Jewish history references, supported with archeology. Makes the Bible "real".

I was gifted my first copy of this book over 40 years ago and it has been my go-to reference when I study the Bible. I tend to read this book concurrently with my Bible reading. I have bought updated versions as they came out, to keep up with new information that was added. The book is a great reference for anyone studying the Bible, and interested in archeology and the history of the Bible. I would be a valuable asset for anyone studying Jewish history too, since almost the first ½ of the book concerns the Old Testament. It helps show that the Bible story is not an abstraction, but is rooted in history and that there are archeological evidence to support the events and places mentioned. It makes the bible more "real". It is a convenient size, so that it could be read in bed, and the typeface and font size are readable. I find it much more useful to look up things in this book when I have a question, vs. heavier tomes, such as Strong's Bible Reference. Some of the "classic" version illustrations were the only weak spot in the book. The older books had line drawn maps, which were difficult to interpret. The photos were all in black and white, and often of such high contrast, that the details were hard to appreciate. Despite these deficiencies, it is still one of the best Bible reference books out there. I saw a "deluxe" version of this book on Amazon, and ordered it along with this one, just to see what the difference would be. The price differential was not prohibitive. I would have to say that the Deluxe version is printed on much better paper, and the illustrations and photos are in color. Many of the images have been updated in the Deluxe version. The textual content appears to be the same, so there are no real changes in the substance of the book, but it does appear to be more visually appealing. It is also a larger book, by about an inch on all sides, and bit thicker. If you are interested in this book, I would recommend that you spend the extra money and get the Deluxe version. Either one will serve you well in your study of the Bible.

Indespensible Bible Handbook

I found my 1957 version of Halley's Bible Handbook but noticed that so much had transpired since then that in places, it was so out-of-date. Only thing I don't like is that it is sooo big and it is a bit cumbersome to hold and read for this old lady. But it is certainly more updated in their analysis.
