this book is a complete and total waste of time. this is one reason why palmistry can not seem to take hold the way astrolog has in our culture. it gives you no clue at all how to see what the patterns really mean. this is like bad fortune telling.

A must read for any spiritual seeker!!!

This is one of the best books on Vedic Palmistry I have read. The author has very deep understanding of the vedic philosophy and the science of palmistry and yet it is presented with a very modern frame of mind. Illustrations are very clear and precise. Foreward by David Frawley - says a lot about the quality of the book. I love every page but my favorite is how each feature of the hand is explained in terms of the 3 levels of consciousness and sattva, rajas and tamas. It is only 104 pages, so no useless fluff either. Hard to put it down once you start reading it. Even if you are not interested in palmistry but are a spiritual seeker, you will not regret you bought this book.

If you want to know why the country (and the world for that matter) is so screwed up, and you want historical proofs not just opinion then read this book. The author takes us all the way back to the Renaissance, through the Reformation, and then to the Enlightenment, where everything goes wrong, and stays wrong. This is followed by the Romantic era, then the Modern era. All the while the theme of fascistic thought is examined. This is nothing new but a direct result of Western civilization giving up the concept of absolutes for the so-called freedom of thought engendered by the Enlightenment philosophers. They may not have been "Fascists" but they sure helped the idea along. The conclusion is that although Fascism as a political movement is no longer active, its ideas are still with us, and getting stronger every day. Our politicians are fascistic and don't even know it, because they follow Enlightenment thinking (when they think at all). As you can tell, this book has been a very stimulating read. It shows us why our Western civilization, in rejecting Christianity, is setting itself up for disaster.

Interesting perspective on the consequences of ideas

This was a well done exposition of the links between postmodern thought and facism. It describes how some of the ideas of facists supporting the Nazis (such as Ezra Pound and Martin Heidegger) are now eminating from the university in postmodernism, and how these ideas lead to totalitarianism. It confronts the anti-transcendant, inherently irrational, and relative utilitarian ethical foundations of such lines of thought as postmodernism, existentialism, deconstrution and the avante guarde, and details the inevitable and disasterous consequences when these academic speculations are put in to practice in the real world. A short pithy read for anyone interested in postmodernism and its place in history. I really should have given it 5 stars, but now I can't change it. Veith is an excellent writer and social analyst whose books are generally short, dense and thought provoking.

Fascinating. Utterly fascinating.

Wish I'd known about this book years ago, instead of discovering it a couple weeks ago.

It's a given that Nazi's are the perennial bad guys of movies and history, with Hitler usually a stand-in for Satan. It's normally overlooked that they had a specific philosophy, that most of their support and leadership came from university intellectuals.

What did Nazis believe and why? Why did they want to kill Jews? Most people actually don't know (some European counties even ban Hitler's book "Mein Kampf") and that, to some degree, is by intent, though it flies in the face of "... if you don't know your history, you are condemned to repeat it...."

In the 1920's and 1930's fascism was popular among intellectuals in the US and abroad. It wasn't until after the war, when the results became clear that many repudiated it.

This book shows the ideas actually lived on, tracing them through specific people and events into the "kinder, gentler" faces we now call New Age and "PC" and "Post-modernism".

Whereas the Judeo-Christian heritage focused on a transcendent God and moral law, fascism rejected that for what is tangible and in nature. Nature and community assume a mystical role.

Essentially, these things are the pre-Christian European paganism of antiquity, coupled with modern media and armies. As part of this, Goering sought to re-establish the ancient "sacred" sites of Germany ... in many ways, Nazism was the revival of the cult of Woten, reborn in the philosophies of Darwin, Nietschze and Romantiscm.

These beliefs were the unquestioned underlying assumptions of the intellectual elites in the 1930's and they remain so today.

Marxism and fascism, far from being polar opposites have much in common. Nazism = socialism + nationalism, while Marxism = socialism + internationalism. Difference is mostly method and in the early part of the century, intellectuals would switch back and forth from being marxists to fascists.

This book draws extensively on original sources to document the purpose and intent of 20th century fascism to eliminate the Judeo-Christian heritage. It documents Hitler's orders to Goebbels and Goering to maintain leadership roles in the church, to maintain credibility, against their will and how in his own words "... after difficult inner struggles I had freed myself of my remaining childhood religious conceptions...".

Hitler wrote how, having solved the more manageable Jewish problem, it would be necessary to address the "church problem": "The point that must be reached is to have the pulpits filled with none but boobs, and the congregations with none but old women. The healthy young people are with us."

And from a Hitler Youth camp song: "We are the happy Hitler youth, we have no need for Christian virtue for Adolph Hitler is our intercessor, and our Redeemer ..."

The book then traces the philosophy of fascism from it's origins into the modern institutions of today. Not perfect, but an awesome book in implication.

After reading this book I've ordered a copy for a grandson and my own son. I knew very little about the SEALS but I've always admired them for what I've read and seen. I like the way the book is written. I always felt that I was in the story with these guys--but thank God I wasn't.

This is a genuinely funny book! As an aside note here, People who gave this book one or two stars, must truly be incurably miserable people that they would never find ANYTHING funny! How truly SAD for those types of people.

I ordered this book because I heard the author talking about it during a radio interview and it peaked my interest. When I finally got the book I was very pleased, as I was taking it with me on a business trip to India. While reading, I found myself laughing out loud, and after my third outburst of laughter, the stewardess came over to tell me to please try and control myself. I gave her the book and told her to please read the short chapter that I had just finished about "Foggy Ice Cubes." She did, and then SHE started laughing hysterically! She also wrote down the name of the book.

All the events that are written about in my book are true.... Only the names of the victims and perpetrators, as well as a few of the locations where the events took place, were changed to protect all those concerned!

About the Author
Billy Allmon is a retired Navy SEAL, he honorably served his country from 1969 to 1993. He retired as a chief petty officer, and he is a combat veteran of three wars. While in the Navy SEALs, Mr. Allmon participated in numerous covert and overt missions around the world in support of US doctrine, foreign governments, militaries, and other official agencies. His new book, "When the Bullet Hits Your Funny Bone - The Essence of a U.S. Navy SEAL," is a reflection of the humorous side of life in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams. Billy Allmon will have you in stitches as he reveals how U.S. Navy SEALs use their humor (and at times it is very dark humor) to relieve the stresses of combat, while facing death on almost a daily bases.

The real deal

I downloaded this book to my kindle. I served in SEAL Team One with the author in the early 70's, then spent the rest of my time as a member of a West coast SEAL reserve team (West Coast Puke). This book brought back some great memories of our time in the Teams and hit the point well for maintaining a sense of humor while engaged in a profession that only a few can endure. I was busting up laughing at several of Billy's stories since they carry the tone and flavor of typical SEAL extracurricular activities in it's day. Whether back in the states or somewhere deployed, when we were not having fun in the field, we were doing it after hours, and some were classic as illustrated in this book. A great read and a big BZ to Billy for writing this and bringing back the good ole days!

A fun read.

"When the Bullet hits Your Funny Bone" is a great read for anyone looking to see how some of the highly trained and most dedicated military professionals pull pranks on their buddies, handle the stresses of an intense job, and blow off steam. This book has a great balance of funny stories, amazing practical jokes and insight into US Navy SEAL training, life, and the bonds that are forged among these men. Most importantly, the stories of fallen comrades and friends truly honor the men who risk their lives regularly. A great read.

Great non-PC laughs ... IF you have a demented sense of humor

I am not in the military, but I have about 20 years as a cop. Suffice to say, my sense of humor is about as messed up as you can find. Dark, cynical, pessimistic ... I've lived it ... the only way to mentally survive the ugliness of all that we see...is to laugh and make jokes about things that really shouldn't be funny at all. This book about SEALs made me laugh on more than one occasion ... and leads me to believe that those of us in ugly job descriptions are very similar in how we cope.

Stop taking your story so seriously, because it is just a video game in your head that no one else plays. Why do we believe in the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves? Think about this for a moment. What is more powerful than the story your believe about yourself? Who is narrating that story? You are. The reader would do well to contemplate this fact before cracking open this book. Who out there is addressing this important issue? Who is writing today to help people deal with their own narrative about themselves? Kevin FitzMaurice is. (Other people are too, but not in a way I've found helpful so far.) You may not agree with everything in his book, but he will (in this and other books) open you up to a whole new set of important questions.

Tip: Kevin gives tons of content in his books. For some readers the amount of content (lists of information) can be overwhelming. I would encourage you to skim parts if necessary. For example, the section on story itself can be read through at a quick pace if you're already familiar with the content, but is a great (and necessary) reminder before you dive into the next chapter that uses those concepts.

Good textbook for class

Was my text book for a class. I could highlight in four different colors, bookmark, make notecards and study them, look a my highlights from previous pages, etc. It was quite easy to navigate through the book. The book was a lot cheaper than renting from the university and I was able to set the rental for the last day of the semester to return it. The downside I would say was sometimes the Kindle for PC app that I downloaded it on did funky things. A couple times I had to remove the program and reinstall it on my laptop, which was frustrating. I also was disappointed I couldn't read it on my Kindle paperwhite or my tablet because the book wasn't supported on that format.

Not unless you're a junkie for overly complicated sentence structure.

I don't know what to say other than I hate it- and I'm a techie! The subject matter (one I'm totally interested in by the way) was very hard to follow. Dull and lifeless. I couldn't believe that chapter after chapter this book failed to capture my attention, and I found myself becoming distracted...again and again. I put it down for a while and started reading another book by another author concerning the same subject and was almost immediately IMMERSED. I'd read through 6 chapters before I realized what I'd done. I'm guessing it's the writing styles that differ so much.

An excellent textbook for first-year college students.

This book provides a good range of diverse materials for a teacher in a first year English course. There are multiple genres and themes, a section of famous paintings for discussions (useful for discussions on literature and art), among other helpful features. The Conscious Reader is an antidote to readers which have the same standard writing for student use.

The book does provide a diverse range of genre. It works well as a literature textbook. However, the quality of the book binding is poor. Students purchase this $50+ textbook only to have chunks of it fall out before the end of the semester. I suppose the publisher sells more textbooks that way, since few books are resold as used books, but I can't recommend it for just that reason.

and while I have always loved the Conscious Reader in general

I've been an AP Language instructor for about 6 years, and while I have always loved the Conscious Reader in general, I feel that this recent edition dropped the ball a bit in terms of the relevance of the texts. While it maintains many of the more "timeless" essays, and adds some interesting voices (I particularly like the del Toro & Hogan piece), the editors seemed to make a weak effort in other areas. The "Popular Culture" section is probably the worst offender, with essays on IM, Tamagotchi, and Twilight that were irrelevant before the book left the printer. Joe Woodard's "Pumped, Pierced, Painted, and Pagan" is still a great read, but much like Rojas's "Bootleg Culture," we're about 20 years past the relevance of the issues they raise.

I think the 11th edition was a bit stronger--the loss of Annie Dillard in the 12th edition is a bit negative. The 12th maintains a lot of the strong pieces from the previous edition, but I feel like the editors really need to reevaluate the longevity of many of the pieces they choose--publishing 12-20 year-old pieces on popular culture results in a lot of useless material. I'd love to see more literary journalists in the CR; John McPhee, Susan Orlean, or Tracy Kidder would be just some positive additions.
