When stingy self-made millionaire and widower Leon Farrell dies, he leaves behind a legacy of family dysfunction - and a missing will. It's soon clear that his three grown children, Edgar, Gunther, and Shirley, don't handle loss well - the possible loss of a fortune, that is. And when Edgar hires a private investigator to track down the will, it's just the beginning of a search that will lead the siblings to re-visit their childhoods, uncover buried secrets, and ultimately learn for themselves what it means to be a family. For as tensions escalate between the brothers - with their peace-keeping sister caught in the middle - an unexpected conflict of interest is brewing that will shock them all - and either bring them closer together or tear them apart for good.

Family
By Sharel Love
Dysfunction can be part of a family even when one looks from the outside in and all appears to be well. In Gwynne Forster's When the Sun Goes Down, we find this to be so with the three Farrell siblings after the death of their father, Leon.

Leon Farrell was an odd character, who seemed to lose touch with real life and the children that most fathers would hold dear to his heart, especially after the loss of his beloved wife. However, he retreated within himself and played a cruel joke on his family, that could have them at odds with one another and ruin their relationships for good.

The eldest sibling, Edgar, was determined to get what was coming to him as a means to an end and continue to be the rebel that he is and live life on his terms. In the meantime, his brother, Gunther, and his sister, Shirley, tried to live their lives in spite of Edgar and the way they were treated by their father when he was alive. No doubt, their upbringing had a lot to do with who they grew to be, albeit, all three different in their own way.

When it was all said and done, secrets were revealed and hidden things brought to the light as this family strived to keep their families together and receive the things that they believed they were entitled to outside of their father and his eccentric ways. At the end of the day, it is about family and the things that we do to remain one.

What I loved about When the Sun Goes Down is how author Forster took her time to tell the story; there was no need to rush the storyline. I recommend this book to everyone who loves stories about family love and romance.

It was just okay
By Ezinwanyi
This book was a decent read, but it was not very good. In this book, we are introduced to 3 siblings at their father's funeral. It becomes very apparent that there was no love lost between them and the deceased father. I don't remember any dialogue detailing any happy memories of time with their father.
We are introduced to Gunther, an entrepeneur software designer. His older brother Edgar, who is a guitarist/gambler/rebel, and a younger sister Shirley, who is a PR specialist for a cruise line.

What I liked about the book is that there seemed to be unwavering love for Edgar, who would make a nun want to strangle him. He is lazy, selfish and direction-less.
Shirley found love in the book (I don't want to give up the details), but that was encouraging.
They were blessed with another sibling, which was revealed through the father's will.

What I didn't like about the book;
1) The dialogue was unnatural and didn't flow. For that reason, I just never connected with the characters. They just seemed too robotic, especially Gunther's dealings with Lissa. I don't know any man who would answer or approach that situation with such clarity of thought and language. Also, this whole thing about "harrassment" was too contrived by the author.
2) I didn't feel that the siblings "enjoyed" life. I heard a lot of acceptance for their life as they were the captains of their own ship--they made their own way--but I didn't feel their enjoyment of their choices.
3) The author could have added more depth to the characters. I mean, it got kind of predictable.
4) This book was just not captivating or intriguing. I put the book down several times to tend to other things. I can read a book like this in 1-2 days. The writing was choppy and didn't flow. But the actual plot and storyline had a lot of potential.

This book was just okay for me.

A quick read
By Read In Colour
"When the sun goes down on my life, you'll all come apart like ripped balloons." The wealthy Leon Farrell spoke those words to his three children before he passed, but, as always, he underestimated them. While his oldest, Edgar, does seem to be falling apart at the seams, Shirley and Gunther are doing just fine.

Shunned by their father after the death of their mother while they were still children, the younger Farrell siblings worked their way through college and into successful careers. Shirley handles PR on board cruise ships and Gunther has built a computer software company that's growing by leaps and bounds. Their oldest brother, Edgar, is the only one that seems to be struggling in the wake of his father's death. It's not that he misses their father, he misses the inheritance that he's sure is coming to him.

In his final thumbing of the nose at his kids, Leon died without telling anyone where his will was, including his attorney of over 20 years. Pressed for money to pay off gambling debts, Edgar hires private investigator, Carson Montgomery, to locate the missing document.

What did you like about this book?
It was a quick and easy read.

What didn't you like about this book?
Some of the conversations seemed so unnatural. For example, at the beginning of the book instead of giving a narration about the siblings, the author has them speaking to each other and describing their jobs to the other as if they're strangers meeting for the first time and not brother and sister.

I was also troubled by the dialect in which the author had the maid and nurse speak. It was almost as if because they were the hired help, they weren't capable of speaking in grammatically correct sentences. Every time I read their words, I cringed just a little.

What could the author do to improve this book?
There were whole chapters that served no purpose and, because of that, the book dragged at some points. I also question the nice, neat ending of the book. It's okay to not have a fairytale ending all the time.

Review
"This book is loaded with insightful and honest advice about the Web 2.0 in education. Will Richardson has amassed decades of technology integration experience as a teacher, consultant, blogger, and educational leader. There are few like him and few books like this.” (Curtis J. Bonk, Professor, Indiana University 2009-08-19)

"Richardson's book was a touchstone for me when I started trying to figure out how to integrate participatory media into my teaching. I recommend this book to any teacher at any level who is interested in the learner-centric pedagogy that social media enables." (Howard Rheingold, Lecturer, Stanford University 2009-08-04)

"Thebest guide you can find to using the power of the Internet in your classroom." (Jeff Jarvis, Author of What Would Google Do? 2009-09-10)

One of my favorite quotes from the book is
By Nicole Wickham
Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms by Will Richardson provide the reader with numerous Web 2.0 tools from weblogs to social media sites and everything in between.
This is the 3rd edition of the book, published in 2010, when social media and online networks were becoming more common. According to Richardson, “A growing majority of students are immersed in social networks and technologies outside of school, and most have no adults in their lives who are teaching them how to use those connections to learn” (p. ix). With that being said, this book is not only for teachers, but also for other adults.
Each chapter of this book is dedicated to a Web 2.0 tool that should be added to a teacher’s toolbox. Richardson describes the tool and even provides examples of how each could be used in the classroom setting. The “Teacher’s Toolbox” includes: weblogs, wikis, really simple syndication, aggregators, social bookmarking, online photo galleries, audio/video casting, twitter, and social networking sites.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is: “Today’s schools are faced with a difficult dilemma that pits a student body that has grown up immersed in technology against a teaching faculty that is less agile with the tools of the trade” (Richardson, 2010, p. 7). It’s time to change this dilemma. As educators, adults, parents, etc. we need to immerse ourselves into the technology as well in order to understand our students and to educate them to their full potential.
Author and technologist Marc Prensky said, “This online life is a whole lot bigger than just the Internet. This online life has become an entire strategy for how to live, survive, and thrive in the twenty-first century where cyberspace is a part of everyday life” (p. 7). Don’t you want to thrive in the twenty-first century and more?

A good introduction to these technologies with directions
By Tinserblic
A good introduction to these technologies with directions, almost like a basic user-friendly instruction manual. It's all easy to read, and there are examples of how these technologies are used with a pedagogical argument for them. My one concern is that while this author strongly advocates for the technologies and makes a strong case given our digital age, he kind of glances over the pitfalls which he acknowledges. I do think there should be more there. He runs paperless classes, but I personally don't think we are there yet, especially in the elementary grades, and there is also more and more evidence emerging that misuse/abuse/overuse of technology is having a detrimental effect on learning. I would therefore advocate more balance than he does. Students absolutely need tech skills, and these technologies, USED RIGHT, can be great tools. I love technology, and this book will help educators understand these technologies better and guide them into beginning to use them. At the same time, his VERY zealous advocacy for a paperless world and a bit too loose of an attitude, I think, around some of the cons (i.e. He even strongly advocates using social media in classrooms.) associated with these technologies should give us cause to pause. Still, overall, a text I can recommend as a decent intro. to these technologies for educators.

Good Read!
By Carissa T.
In this book I really thought that it was helpful for teachers and parents alike. There are always those tough questions that we face as adults when it comes to parenting and educating and this was a helpful resource. One of the main chapters that I focused on was chapter 3. This chapter is about how all parents, students, and administrators are clear on why this technology is being used in the classroom. For parents the first thing that they can do to make sure their child is safe is give their student permission to use this technology for school. Most schools send home an acceptable use sheet to sign and parents should be aware of this and make sure that they get one. Parents also need to communicate with teachers about what the teacher is doing to make sure that student privacy is protected. Parents need to make sure they talk to their children about never putting personal information on the blogs and the parents also need to know the process for reporting problems with blog content. Lastly as a parent they need to oversee the student's blog and then decide what to do with it at the end of the course. When creating a weblog with students always start small and work your way up. Blogger.com created by Google is one of the easiest weblogs for anyone to use, there is no perfect way to use a blog but this one is up there for ease of use and not a lot of confusion. As a teacher it is hard to track all of what your students are doing, however, you can follow your students and watch their posts. You can edit and have different templates and even add pictures to blogs as well.

Cities, Museums and Soft Power, by Gail Dexter Lord, Ngaire Blankenberg

Museum planners Gail Lord and Ngaire Blankenberg demonstrate how museums and cities are using their soft power to address some of the most important issues of our time.Soft power is the exercise of influence through attraction, persuasion, and agenda-setting rather than military or economic coercion.Thirteen of the world's leading museum and cultural experts from six continents explore the many facets of soft power in cities and museums: how it amplifies civic discourse, accelerates cultural change, and contributes to contextual intelligence among the great diversity of city dwellers, visitors, and policy makers. The authors urge city governments to embrace museums which so often are the signifiers of their cities, increasing real estate values while attracting investment, tourists, and creative workers. Lord and Blankenberg propose 32 practical strategies for museums and cities to activate their soft power and create thriving and sustainable communities.

Review
Cities, Museums and Soft Power is a must read for museum leaders who grapple with their institution's role in building cultural infrastructure locally or globally. Readable, instructive and compelling, this book builds the case for museums as strong, society-minded networks that can deftly employ soft power to accelerate cultural change and empower citizens at home or around the world. (Melody Kanschat, Executive Director, Getty Leadership Institute)

In this important and timely book, Gail Dexter Lord and Ngaire Blakenberg have brought together an innovative array of essays that not only answer the perennial question of why museums matter, but also suggest a blueprint for how museums can exercise more influence and be of greater value to their urban communities. This is a must-read for those who care about culture, museums and the evolution of our communities in the 21st century. (Lonnie G. Bunch, Founding Director, National Museum of African American History and Culture)

The authors build a compelling argument as they explore what's next for cities, museums, and soft power, framing the international conversation about the future in fresh and provocative ways. A fascinating book. (Jim Thompson, Founder, Museum Next, London)

It's OK to be sad.
By Heather F.
My daughter is about to start Kindergarten so we spend a lot of time talking about feelings. We talk about how her actions can make others feel and how others actions can make her feel. We let her know that it’s ok to be mad and sad and happy, but that it’s how she acts during those times that impact others. Our hope is that she understands the “why” behind what she does and feels. A great way to help explain all of this is through books.

I was given the opportunity to purchase Pink Tears free of charge in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. Pink Tears is about Lolly, a young furry pink character that becomes sad when nobody is playing with her. She keeps her feelings of sadness bottled up inside, without talking to anyone. She slowly starts turning blue on the outside to match how she is feeling on the inside. Her parents try to talk to her and tell her that she needs to let the pain out, but she doesn’t listen. One morning the sadness becomes too much and the tears pour out, turning her pink again. The release of sadness makes her feel better and she goes to meet her friends.

I feel like this book addresses sadness, but left my daughter with a lot more questions than an understanding of the message. Questions like why didn’t Lolly ask to play with the others, why didn’t Lolly’s parents give her a hug, why did Lolly think it wasn’t ok to cry even though her parent’s told her it was, and what did Lolly think was missing at the end? All of these questions I tried my best to answer, but I think took away from the true message of the story.

Great Conversation Starter for a Hard Topic
By Renee Knows Reviews
Feelings can be the source of several difficult conversations with a child. This cute little book can help start some of those. It follows the main character Lolly through a tough day in which none of her friends play with her. At first Lolly is a little sad and as she bottles up the emotions she turns blue in color as her sorrow grows until she cries. Once Lolly has cried and let her emotions flow through her, she is able to feel like herself again and the book ends with her getting together with her friends. The book is short and a little vague as to why exactly Lolly's friends don't play with her but my child didn't mind a simple explanation of "they must have all been busy" but you may need to be prepared. I think it is a cute book and not too long for a quick read. My child enjoyed it and there were some good conversation topics about feelings and sadness that can be difficult to talk about with children built into the story. I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I love how it teaches about emotions and how to not ...
By Miss Carla
The book Pink Tears is really cute, I love how it teaches about emotions and how to not bottle them up. My son really liked the book as well and kept pointing at Lolly! I wish the book would have gone into some more detail about how or why the others were not playing with Lolly and then the end was a little sudden with her just going back out and everything was fine.

But the illustrations speak to children more then words and this shows what happens when you keep it all inside and are simply beautiful.

I received this item at a discount in exchange for a review, all opinions are mine and unbiased.

Morbo: The Story of Spanish Football, by Phil Ball

Morbo is the unique element that gives Spanish football its special flavour. More than mere rivalry, it is the expression in a thousand provocative ways of the feeling between clubs divided by history, language and politics.

At its most bitter between Barcelona and Real Madrid, the same spirit courses through the uncompromising politics of the Basque Country, hangs over the divided city of Seville and marks Spain’s attitudes towards its national team.

In this brand new 2011 edition, Phil Ball examines the recent successes of the Spanish national team in the World Cup of 2010 and the European Championship of 2008, as the dark horses finally managed to live up to their potential. In addition the analysis of the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona is brought up to date to take account of the impact of Jos Mourinho and the many fractious recent encounters between the two clubs, in both domestic and European competition.

An Excellent Cultural Study
By Paul Marc Oliu
American audiences exposed to the EPL, La Liga or any other league for that matter, often times only get to see 2 dimensions of the game. First, the emphasis on the bigger team names, and second, the game itself. What they often fail to see is the intracacy of the game behind the game - that is, the cultural elements that make soccer overseas so unique, so passionate, and often times, so beyond the grasp of comprehension to the audience that is watching on Fox Soccer Channel.

In Morbo, Phil Ball does a wonderful job of illustrating the cultural background to spanish soccer. And true to form, he effectively illustrates that La Liga is not only about Barcelona and Real Madrid. There is much history between these two clubs but fortunately, Ball doesn't spend all his effort on them. Instead he dives into the history of spanish soccer, starting with English miners, to the history of clubs that no one has heard of outside of Spain, like Recreativo de Huelva.

This is far more a cultural study, than it is a history of spanish soccer. Balls successfully discusses how the two paths combine, and how club support was defined more by class/politics/ and culture, than by a jersey's color. It certainly goes a long way in helping outsiders understand the level of support and the long ties people have to clubs. It is especially interesting in light of how the modern world is shaping the game.

Finally, like many sports leagues, there is history and their is myth. Ball does a service to the spanish game by not buying into the myth of some of the rivalries (Betis-Sevilla, RM-Barcelona, Athletic-everyone else). In doing so, he provides a complete and true picture of how the game has evolved on the Iberian peninsula.

For people interested in understanding how events actually shaped the game in Spain, this is a must read. There are plenty of books out there about Real Madrid and Barcelona, but there are few books that look at Spanish soccer with this depth and refreshing candor.

History of Spain
By Vikram J P
This is a remarkable book. Whereas it took Jimmy Burns of the Financial Times a whole book to wax about Barcelona, Phil Ball does it beautifully in a few pages. Morbo is a superb exploration of Spanish politics, Spanish geography, and the one thing that unites all of Spain-football. Spain is, it seems, a poor advertisement for the sort of national unity that dominated 19th. century Europe-Germany, Scotland, and Italy and later, India and China. Phil Ball's book exhibits a child-like happiness when he visits soccer stadiums in the forgotten corners of Spain. He exposes the hypocrisy of Basque politics, the long shadow of Francisco Franco in Spain and, finally, the exuberance of that Catalan city: Barcelona. This is a must-read for people who are interested not only in the cuisine of a particular peoples-Basque and Catalan- but in their vibrant history beyond the kitchen, beyond the football pitch as well.

The Spanish labyrinth seen through the prism of football
By M. E. Llorens
Anyone who doesn't know much about twentieth-century Spain will be surprised by this book from the first page, because it is not simply about Spanish football-soccer but about the widely divergent regional footballing traditions that converge every weekend in the stadium. The progression of chapters (Huelva, Bilbao, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville) is, of course, chronological (following the founding dates of major clubs from the past and present) but also a device to ease the reader into the myriad political and cultural undercurrents that flow beneath the surface slickness of Spain's Primera Liga, which is now beamed worldwide via cable.

This is a great introduction to Spanish soccer for anyone bewildered by the Catalans rooting for Germany during the 2010 World Cup. The author, a British expat, provides the necessary lens adjustment for the outsider looking into this cultural product that now sells itself on a world market but is still dominated by deep-rooted meanings and symbols that are often imperceptible from abroad. The chapter about the national team's chronic underperformance is, of course, now seriously outdated after a European Cup and a World Cup, but the "morbo" surrounding Bilbao-Real Madrid games or Barcelona-Espanyol matches certainly isn't.

Immigrant Children in Transcultural Spaces: Language, Learning, and Love, by Marjorie Faulstich Orellana

Grounded in both theory and practice, with implications for both, this book is about children’s perspectives on the borders that society erects, and their actual, symbolic, ideational and metaphorical movement across those borders. Based on extensive ethnographic data on children of immigrants (mostly from Mexico, Central America and the Philippines) as they interact with undergraduate students from diverse linguistic, cultural and racial/ethnic backgrounds in the context of an urban play-based after-school program, it probes how children navigate a multilingual space that involves playing with language and literacy in a variety of forms.

Immigrant Children in Transcultural Spaces speaks to critical social issues and debates about education, immigration, multilingualism and multiculturalism in an historical moment in which borders are being built up, torn down, debated and recreated, in both real and symbolic terms; raises questions about the values that drive educational practice and decision-making; and suggests alternatives to the status quo. At its heart, it is a book about how love can serve as a driving force to connect people with each other across all kinds of borders, and to motivate children to engage powerfully with learning and life.

Wandering God, by Morris Berman

The third book in Morris Berman's much acclaimed trilogy on the evolution of human consciousness, Wandering God continues his earlier work which garnered such praise as "solid lessons in the history of ideas" (KIRKUS Reviews), "filled with piquant details" (Common Boundary), "an informative synthesis and a remarkably friendly, good-natured jeremiad" (The Village Voice). Here, in a remarkable discussion of our hunter-gatherer ancestry and the "paradoxical" mode of perception that it involved, Berman shows how a sense of alertness, or secular/sacred immediacy, subsequently got buried by the rise of sedentary civilization, religion, and vertical power relationships.

Amazon.com Review
In Wandering God, counterculture scholar Morris Berman goes counter-counterculture, taking on such hallowed figures as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell. Following the lead of Bruce Chatwin's Songlines, Berman discovers the natural state of humanity in our nomadic origins, taking us back not to the early civilizations and their myths but to our Paleolithic ancestors. While debunking Jung and Campbell, Berman draws on a range of anthropological studies to show civilization itself to be pathological, and religion and mysticism to be a coping response. What is natural, he says, is living in paradox, with a heightened sensitivity to our surroundings, in the timeless uncertainty of moment-to-moment living. Leaning toward what one might consider a Daoist or Zen sensibility, Berman serves up persuasive arguments, and his use of sources from Bernadette Roberts to Ludwig Wittgenstein are nothing short of virtuosic. However, his entire theory seems to stand or fall on whether one accepts the immense causal influence of the Freudian notion of infantile attachment, which, if not subject to the same types of methodological criticism he aims at Jung and Campbell, is at least vulnerable to a Wittgensteinian disentanglement. Berman admits that his theory is preliminary, and Wandering God should be read in that spirit. --Brian Bruya

From Kirkus Reviews
paper 0-7914-4442-2 Promising, vivid speculations on the evolution of mental states and varieties of consciousness from Berman (Coming to Our Senses, not reviewed). In this third volume of his trilogy on the paths of consciousness, Berman traces the societal movement from horizontal, egalitarian relations to vertical, hierarchical ones. Lost in the transition, according to Berman, was the magic of everyday life, the hunter-gatherer's alertness that captures the eternal in a moment of permanent ephemerality. The integration of the universal into the particular through the acceptance of (and the revelation of living in) the world as it is also tamps the pain of alienation following in the wake of recognizing a separate self. Berman draws upon research to refute the interpretation of the Paleolithic period as myth-drenched; instead, he tenders the possibility it was marked by paradoxan utter watchfulness within the numinous landscapein which children ``cathected the whole environment'' to mend the split between self and world. Whereas human beings are hard-wired to be on the movemovement is the physiological substrate of the paradoxical experience''sedentism and agriculture have been ``forced upon us by a combination of external circumstances and a latent drive for power and inequality.'' Openness to experience faded, certainties and absolutes replaced our need for uncertainty and surprise, paradigms follow paradigms as ultimate (and ineffectual) fixes. Unfortunately, we can't just superimpose nomadic spirituality over our verticalities. As Wittgenstein recognized, and Berman concurs, ``there finally is no way of jettisoning the transcendent without drifting into incoherence.'' But paradox can be a gadfly, challenging our notions of destiny, heroism, and certainty, exposing ourselves to the congruence of hunter-gatherer life, and, Berman suggests, ``if our culture does have a future, it may well depend on the development of the dialectical possibilities that exist between horizontal and vertical aspects of life.'' Gilgamesh understood the paradox; it glimmers in works from Alice Miller to Ortega y Gassett to Bernadette Roberts; and Berman lets it loose to humble authority and hierarchy. Review
This immensely fecund work gives us a sweeping overview of significant aspects of human evolution, shedding light on how we have imprisoned ourselves socially, culturally, and intellectually [and] how we might find a way out of the bottleneck I can heartily recommend this work as an antidote to sluggish intellectualism. Georg Feuerstein, Traditional Yoga Studies Interactive
This is the best book in Morris Berman s trilogy on the evolution of human consciousness. Wandering God offers a thought-provoking thesis thoroughly grounded in first-class research and thinking in a dazzling array of fields. He persuasively shows how our search for a non-destructive path through the future will be enhanced if we choose nomadic thinking and mature ambiguity over ideological fundamentalism. David H. Spain, University of Washington
Berman represents one of the rare species of American multilingual intellectuals with a grasp of a wide historical and anthropological literature. His knowledge is truly encyclopaedic and catholic in its breadth, extremely rich and suggestive of new ideas. The book combines psychoanalysis and structural forces in a rare synthesis. Wonderous Wandering
By A Customer
A paradigm addict's worst nightmare, "Wandering God" eschews everything from the intellectual dishonesty of Deconstructionism to the reassuring but ultimately flawed cross-cultural Comparativism of modern-day idols, Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung.
Third in his trilogy on Human Consciousness, W.G. is Berman's leanest and most densely packed argument so far. The book abounds with scintillating insights on diverse subjects, such as the role that child-rearing has on modern life, and boldly rejects the conventional thesis that Ludwig Wittgenstein's "lost years" were actually so. What on this good green Earth do these two subjects have in common? More than you think.
But this brief and quixotic description is putting the cart before the proverbial horse.
Berman's main focus is in articulating the difference between traditional hunter-gatherer and sedentary consciousnesses, how both are part of our common heritage, and how vestiges of the former (horizontal, paradoxical) collide with the dominant zeitgeist of the latter (vertical, power-driven).
Many have been attracted to this book by the Idries Shah-like cover, a desert caravan image, or lulled into thinking W.G. is another in the endless junkpile of New Age tomes with the word "spirituality" in its sub-title. Those of us who know Berman's work can already see beyond the lamentable dust-jacket design. "Wandering God" moves adroitly across precise, scientific vistas into uncharted terrain - the depths of the human mind and body. By the book's end, one has witnessed, and participated in, the eruption of an intellectual volcano.
Some reviewers have been put off by Berman's unwillingness to neatly package and tie off his theses, and stake his academical prize. But that just confirms what Berman claims about the vertical, ascent underpinnings of modern human life, which are driven by a need to conquer and achieve, be it political power or mental/spiritual proselytizing.
This book is highly recommended.

Go Horizontal, Not Vertical
By Stanley Krippner
Morris Berman's masterful book, Wandering God, argues that humakind lost its way once agriculture and sedentary life styles set in. Even though humans have the same brains and bodies that characterized their prehistoric ancestors, they worship a vertical god (in the "heavens") and arrange their societies in vertical hierarchies. Berman touts the advantages of horizontal, egalitatarian relationships and spiritual practices, even though it necessitates living in the paradoxes that come with self-awareness. Although he depends too much on the Freudian notion of "infantile attachment" to make his case, Berman's message is provocative and visionary.

Berman's Best Yet
By Charles D. Hayes
Morris Berman has had a profound effect on my thinking during the past decade. "Wandering God," I've concluded, after long deliberation, is my favorite of all of his books. I shied away from it at first because of my aversion to books with the word spirituality in the title. The term is used so often and in so many ways that I'm never certain what it means. I should have know better in Berman's case. This is a fascinating read, and it raises questions about the history of consciousness which should have been aired decades ago, were it not for the tendency of scholarship to converge into group-think. One thing for sure, Berman is always out in front, ahead of the group. His complete confidence and maturity of thought enables him to lay out paragraph after paragraph of serious thought and then wrap it up with a personal statement that shows he respects the reader more than the institutions that rein over serious subject matter. If you want to read something that will give you food for thought for years to come, read "Wandering God."
