Andrew Zega and Bernd H. Dams are well-known architectural historians and illustrators specializing in European architecture and garden history. Their watercolors are exhibited at Didier Aaron Inc., Manhattan, and Galerie de Bayser, S.A., Paris.
Zega and Dams are the authors of Pleasure Pavilions and Follies: In the Gardens of the Ancien R�gime and Garden Vases.
Foreword by the Vicomte de Rohan, president of the Society of Friends of Versailles, France's premier philanthropic organization, who have been dedicated to promoting the interests of Versailles in France and internationally since 1907.

Simply exquisite.

There is little more to say for Dams' beautiful tribute to the artistic creations of the Sun King's insatiable architectural appetite. The renderings are some of the most perfect ever created, and the text a fine complement to the art. It is Versailles, not only re-imagined, but recreated in a way inaccessible to any other medium or forum. This is the palace and its environs as they have never been seen or understood, except perhaps by their own architects. Here, the palaces stand forth alone and in concert, masterworks of French baroque and absolutism, indistinguishable from the demigod-like man who commissioned and lived in them, yet distinguished amongst themselves as complete and whole.

Excellent overview of the many structures of Louis XIV!

This book covers many structures, commissioned by Louis XIV, that were either built or were designed but not executed. The pictures that the authors did themselves are spetacular! The text is also above average. I however must warn you it is not worth $135.00 which is the book's retail price. The book's length was a huge dissapointment. It is only 208 pages (not 224 as they say in the book description) which includes the table of contents, index, bibliography, etc. The authors did not fill the pages with as many illustrations and text as I would've liked.If I had it to do over again would not pay the retail price for this book. I would buy a used one instead. Overall though, despite its length, the book does provide the reader with an in-depth look at the exquisite architecture of the Sun King.
