Their feedback led to expanded or new coverage of topics such as deep learning and deep neural networks, including convolutional neural nets, the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), maximally-stable extremal regions (MSERs), graph cuts, k-means clustering and superpixels, active contours (snakes and level sets), and exact histogram matching. Major improvements were made in reorganizing the material on image transforms into a more cohesive presentation, and in the discussion of spatial kernels and spatial filtering. Major revisions and additions were made to examples and homework exercises throughout the book. About the Author

Rafael C. Gonzalez received the B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Miami in 1965 and the M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1967 and 1970, respectively. He joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) in 1970, where he became Associate Professor in 1973, Professor in 1978, and Distinguished Service Professor in 1984. He served as Chairman of the department from 1994 through 1997. He is currently a Professor Emeritus at UTK.

Gonzalez is the founder of the Image & Pattern Analysis Laboratory and the Robotics & Computer Vision Laboratory at the University of Tennessee. He also founded Perceptics Corporation in 1982 and was its president until 1992. The last three years of this period were spent under a full-time employment contract with Westinghouse Corporation, who acquired the company in 1989.

Under his direction, Perceptics became highly successful in image processing, computer vision, and laser disk storage technology. In its initial ten years, Perceptics introduced a series of innovative products, including: The world's first commercially-available computer vision system for automatically reading the license plate on moving vehicles; a series of large-scale image processing and archiving systems used by the U.S. Navy at six different manufacturing sites throughout the country to inspect the rocket motors of missiles in the Trident II Submarine Program; the market leading family of imaging boards for advanced Macintosh computers; and a line of trillion-byte laserdisc products.

He is a frequent consultant to industry and government in the areas of pattern recognition, image processing, and machine learning. His academic honors for work in these fields include the 1977 UTK College of Engineering Faculty Achievement Award; the 1978 UTK Chancellor's Research Scholar Award; the 1980 Magnavox Engineering Professor Award; and the 1980 M.E. Brooks Distinguished Professor Award. In 1981 he became an IBM Professor at the University of Tennessee and in 1984 he was named a Distinguished Service Professor there. He was awarded a Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Miami in 1985, the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar Award in 1986, and the University of Tennessee's Nathan W. Dougherty Award for Excellence in Engineering in 1992.

Honors for industrial accomplishment include the 1987 IEEE Outstanding Engineer Award for Commercial Development in Tennessee; the 1988 Albert Rose Nat'l Award for Excellence in Commercial Image Processing; the 1989 B. Otto Wheeley Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer; the 1989 Coopers and Lybrand Entrepreneur of the Year Award; the 1992 IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award; and the 1993 Automated Imaging Association National Award for Technology Development.

Gonzalez is author or co-author of over 100 technical articles, two edited books, and four textbooks in the fields of pattern recognition, image processing and robotics. His books are used in over 500 universities and research institutions throughout the world. He is listed in the prestigious Marquis Who's Who in America, Marquis Who's Who in Engineering, Marquis Who's Who in the World, and in 10 other national and international biographical citations. He ii is the co-holder of two U.S. Patents, and has been an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, and the International Journal of Computer and Information Sciences. He is a member of numerous professional and honorary societies, including Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kapp Nu, and Sigma Xi. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Richard E. Woods earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1975, 1977, and 1980, respectively. He became an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1981 and was recognized as a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus in 1986.

A veteran hardware and software developer, Dr. Woods has been involved in the founding of several high-technology startups, including Perceptics Corporation, where he was responsible for the development of the company’s quantitative image analysis and autonomous decision-making products; MedData Interactive, a high technology company specializing in the development of handheld computer systems for medical applications; and Interapptics, an internet-based company that designs desktop and handheld computer applications.

Dr. Woods currently serves on several nonprofit educational and media-related boards, including Johnson University, and was recently a summer English instructor at the Beijing Institute of Technology. He is the holder of a U.S. Patent in the area of digital image processing and has published two textbooks, as well as numerous articles related to digital signal processing. Dr. Woods is a member of several professional societies, including Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and the IEEE.

Understood quite a lot...

This is a good introduction to image processing.
The first chapters introduce the readers to the fundamentals of human vision and how the brain processes light, contrast and color. The examples are clear and understandable.
As the book progresses, the subjects become more complex and mathematically-oriented. I found that I could follow up with those topics in which I had prior background, like intensity transformations, spatial filtering, filtering in the frequency domain, color image processing, image compression and image segmentation. In these topics I understood most of what they were explaining, except maybe the last pages of each chapter.
When it came to chapters where I was weaker or not familiar at all, I have to admit that I was able to keep up only with the first pages of each one. More specifically: Wavelets and multithreshold processing, morphological image processing, representation, fuzzy logic and object recognition. These chapters became muddy very quickly, and I only got a general feeling about what they were explaining.
Maybe someone with an electrical engineering background (myself being mechanical/software) would understand better the advanced topics.
I plan to read them again once I have a practical need or use for those areas.
The book does not contain code samples but it has quite a lot of practical use examples with pictures.
In summary, I understood roughly 65% of the book and would recommend it to anyone who needs a better understanding of image processing.

Gonzalez & Woods (3rd ed) is not only the best single reference in the field of image processing, but it is also one of the best technical books I ever read, in any field. Text and examples are clear, mathematics is at the right level to be precise, formal and understandable as well. You'll learn a lot about many things in this book.

About the Author
Mary Mackay(1855 - 1924) was an English novelist famous for her melodramatic themes and better known by her pen name Marie Corelli. Beginning her career as a musician, Corelli became one of the best - selling authors of her time. Her books were collected by the Royal family as well as by Churchill. In her writings, she attempted to unitedifferent spiritual ideals with Christianity. Her first novel published in 1886, was A Romance of Two Worlds.

Extremely occult . . . and extremely beautiful

To which literary genre does "Romance of Two Worlds" belong? It has sci-fi, fantasy, and occult elements. It offers some adventure, some romance, and some mystery. What is most striking, however, is that the plot is about a spiritual quest--the kind everyone feels the need to begin, sooner or later, when the world's answers no longer satisfy one's questions.
Marie Corelli's nameless narrator represents the seeking soul in all of us. Yet, at the beginning of the story, she appears to have given up the search. Unlike those who have never bothered to search and do not mind being in the dark, she is wasting away in mind, body and spirit. Then she meets a mysterious painter who asks to do her portrait. It is in his studio that she has her first supernatural experience, which rejuvenates her body and rekindles her need to find the answers.
Her first teacher is another mysterious figure, a Chaldean named Heliobas. (It is hinted in some chapters that he may be one of the identities of the Avatar known as the Comte de St. Germaine. I'm keeping an open mind.) Naturally, most of the world sees him as eccentric and frightening: his strange experiments with electricity and his radical takes on everything (including the books of the bible) make him a fascinating teacher to those who have "eyes to see and ears to hear," but a threat to society to those who remain in the dark.
Here is how Corelli's writing can be so off-putting. Nobody likes thinking that he or she is in the dark about anything; yet Corelli stoutly implies that this must be so for those who do not believe in her blatantly occult themes. Then she goes on to combine occult and Christian elements, creating a bizarre form of esoteric Christianity that she presents as TRUTH.
Yet let's not quibble over terminology. So what if Corelli believes that the soul is literally electric and that Heaven is a great electric circle? Other writers have made similar guesses about the soul and about Heaven, using safe words like "love" or "light." This retelling is particularly lovely, due to Corelli's descriptive and reverent style. It is with great passion that the heroine declares: "I desire to know why this world, this universe exists; and I also wish to prove, if possible, the truth and necessity of religion. And I think I would give my life, if it were worth anything, to be certain of the truth of Christianity."
I don't want to reveal the reason why the novel's title is "Romance of Two Worlds", because behind it is a fascinating twist that I think all readers should discover on their own. Don't worry that the book is all dialogue and teaching, however, as the plot takes many unexpected turns.
Other books in what has been called the "Heliobas triology" are "Ardath" and "The Soul of Lilith". However, it is "The Life Everlasting" that is the proper continuation of "Romance of Two Worlds", as it leads our heroine to a romance of her very own.

This magnificent piece of work changed my life...

You have probably already read all about how wonderfully Madame Corelli writes, and thus, I shall not elaborate on that. All that I can say is that this heavenly-sent book has changed my life. I had always been turned off from Christianity because of all the things that I knew of the church, and of the bleak end that awaited all who didn't belive in the church. But Marie opened up my eyes and my heart. I came across this book by "chance" and am now sure that it was all ordained by God. Thanks to this book opening up my senses, I now have found my twin soul and we are eternally grateful to God for the gifts he has given us. I highly recommend this book to both those who feel that they have already begun upon thier own spiritual journey, and those who feel alienated from God. "The Life Everlasting", a later book by also written by this earthly angel is another book that I belive we all need to read. Just give it 30 pages and you will most certainly agree with me. Thank you ! and God be with you!

Electricity and Occult Christianity.

_A Romance of Two Worlds_ by Victorian novelist Marie Corelli is a majestic tale full at once of mystery, intrigue, romance, and the occult revealing the inner meaning of Christianity in beautiful prose. Marie Corelli was an English novelist of the Victorian era who was much criticized in her day for her scathing criticism of the materialism, positivism, and scientism popular in the late Nineteenth century as revealed in her novels. This novel expounds an occult theory of Christianity based on electricity. At the same time however, the author decries the excesses of spiritism that had made their way to fill in the gap left by materialist philosophy. The author does not espouse any particular creed of Christianity, though this novel focuses upon Catholicism; however, her theory of the occult essence in electricity is unique. This is what makes up her "Electric Creed of Christianity". The book includes an introduction and preface written by the author as well as an appendix containing letters testifying to the uniqueness of Marie Corelli's spiritualism. Corelli was obviously influenced by Swedenborgianism and Theosophy as well which can be seen in the novel in several places.

This novel tells the tale of the author, a pianist, who has become ill with a physical depression due to overwork. At the request of her doctor, who has run out of cures, she is advised to leave London and head for warmer climes. She travels with two friends, an American colonel and his wife. She arrives in Cannes where she meets the artist, Raffaelo Cellini, who has acquired an amazing system of color and who offers to paint her portrait. Although she is ill, she decides to allow him to do so. While Cellini is painting her portrait he offers her a magic elixer which provides her with three visions of a mysterious individual known as Heliobas. She is to find out that Heliobas is the artist's master and that he had saved Cellini from a similar depression. She is given a book to examine which reveals the hidden spiritual meaning in music and she also meets Heliobas' incredible Newfoundland dog Leo who travels back and forth from Paris where Heliobas resides bringing messages. Cellini agrees to have her meet Heliobas who will be able to cure her through his wonderful electrical powers. The author travels to Paris where she meets Heliobas and is given special potions which enable her to make a full recovery. She also meets Heliobas' sister Zara, a sculptress impressive in her own right, and their friend Prince Ivan. Heliobas is a mysterious Chaldean who has mastered the art of electricity. He allows the author to experience entirely new realms, including interplanetary travel in which she sees for herself the glories of God, the angelic being Azul (Heliobas' "twin soul"), her own guardian angel, and the mysteries of Christianity. All of this is accomplished through what Marie Corelli calls "electricity". Zara herself is possessed of special electrical powers and wears a special stone which serves to channel her electrical charge. The book encompasses at once mystery, romance, tragedy, and yet it offers hope through Christian belief against the materialism and atheism of the age. Throughout Corelli notes how many have scoffed at traditional belief in Christ and that few will understand her novel or its inner meaning. The novel also offers philosophical proof for the existence of God and the truth of God incarnate as Christ. The writing is beautiful and majestic, truly appealing to the inner soul. This novel remains a unique experience among Victorian writers and represents the first attempt of Marie Corelli at writing novels.

Well developed characters and a thoroughly developed plot

**Reviewers note: This review encompasses the three books in Ms. Briscoe's Red Bird Trilogy: Flagger, Collision, and In Tune. This author contacted me to review this trilogy knowing that I enjoyed her other work but gave me the heads up that the first two books in this trilogy ended in somewhat of a cliffhanger type ending and because she and I are Facebook friends she knew how I felt about that and made sure I understood that and in the end I made the decision to wait until all three books were out before reading this trilogy. I will say that I probably would have been fine reading them as they released as the cliffhangers were not too bad and the fact that she released the three books very quickly but I'm also glad I waited because I very much enjoyed being able to pick up the next book immediately and moving forward with this couple.

When Cash Montgomery was introduced into Laramie Briscoe's Heaven Hill series I knew then I wanted to know more about the young mechanic. The Red Bird Trilogy tells his story and it isn't a pretty one; Cash's life has been hard and being that he's only 21 he's endured a lot more than people his age should even have to endure but he's willing to work hard and do what it takes to make something out of himself and to make sure his much younger brother, Remy, never has to deal with everything he's had to in his life. Cash might be a bad boy, tattooed, racing hot shot but there are many layers to him and when he crosses paths with Harper Stillwell the first time he has no clue how much his life is going to change.

While this book is most likely classified as a new adult given the ages of the characters are 21 and 19, between the two of them their life experiences make them so much older. That's not to say they don't have their moments when they show they are absolutely that age but I have to give them both credit for how hard they work, their goals and ambitions and the fact that they both put 10 year old Remy ahead of themselves and even when they do make mistakes they do it because they are young and are simply trying to protect themselves from what they fear the most.

In this trilogy we see them meet, act on their undeniable chemistry, move in together out of necessity, fall in love, have issues, reconnect, confront issues, begin to heal and figure things out and eventually get to that place where they (along with Remy) are secure, happy and in love. It was hard watching them go through everything they had to in order to get to that happy place. My heart broke for them both as they dealt with the demons in their past and worked hard just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. I loved seeing the members of the Heaven Hill MC there to support them, to offer advice and for the help these two desperately needed even when they didn't want to admit it. I also loved watching them mature, grow and change without losing themselves in the process and I applaud them for getting help when they realized they were over their heads and needed a safe place to talk about everything that had happened in their short lives.

Ms. Briscoe has a knack for writing characters that you can believe, gives them lives that aren't easy but yet there is hope and for making them see that having someone beside you can make a difference. I will say that this book is quite a bit sexier than the others she has written and that's not a bad thing, it is just different from her norm but it seemed to fit these characters well.

All in all I very much enjoyed this trilogy and this author did right by these characters by not rushing their story and trying to cram it all into one book where the conflict and problems were solved easily and overnight. These characters needed time and by allowing them that time, the story played out successfully and reasonably. Well developed characters, a thoroughly developed plot and a story that showed us that hard work, dedication and sacrifices can lead you to everything you want out of life made the Red Bird Trilogy an outstanding addition to Ms. Briscoe's body of work.

Cash is a complicated young guy with a penchant for racing fast cars and playing fast and loose with the ladies but that is only the surface facts, the things he wants people to see, because underneath the tough lothario James Dean attitude, Cash is burdened with the task of being the main breadwinner and care taker of his younger brother as their mother is an addict with severe emotional issues. It's only when our two main protagonists finally meet and really talk and begin a rather untraditional friendship, that is the fragile beginnings of something deeper, that Cash and Harper both realise and recognise the loneliness, sadness and craving for love in one another that might just have them fighting for a chance at something they never dreamed possible.

Harper is magnificent. She's intelligent, has integrity and pride in herself even after the disturbing events of her childhood. She has her reservations about Cash and his infamous character but she takes a chance on him and what starts out as comfort and fun soon transforms into a beautiful love story with substance and heat and a whole lot of passion with both characters embracing the others flaws and perfections. Independently Cash and Harper are superb characters to read about but once they combine the sexual chemistry and soul connection they obviously share sparkles and sizzles off the page. There's plenty of drama, angst and emotion at play in Flagger, both on the racing circuit and off as well as thigh-clenching steamy sex scenes and sweet romance. It is a three part story so not all loose ends are tied up at the end but it was a great ending, my only problem with the book is the fact that I would have liked it to be a bit longer, but that's just me being greedy. With Laramie Briscoe's writing I never expect anything less than stellar and she has never once let me down.

Would love to ride with Cash

While Flagger is a separate trilogy from the Heaven Hill MC series and it can be read as a standalone; I recommend that you take the time to read the other series if not first then shortly afterwards because there is a cross over that may make you understand who is who a little bit better. That being said, it is only my personal suggestion. I have read the entire Heaven Hill series so far so I knew who certain people were prior to beginning Flagger. Let’s get down to business now shall we?

Flagger is the first book in the Red Bird Trail trilogy and what a way to start! I lately have had a thing about racing books, oh he!! let’s be honest here I love to race in real life and while I may have settled down some since I had kids I still love the thrill of driving fast, knowing that you are in control of how fast you can go. Cash Montgomery is oh so sexy, he knows he is a bada$$ on the track and let’s face it he’s just a bada$$ period because of how he takes care of his little brother Remy. I would love to be in the seat next to him during a race, or even afterward, that Harper is a lucky girl. Harper has her own issues that she is dealing with but her and Cash connect in more than a sexual way, it is almost like the fates conspired for these two to be what not only saves the other but to show what real love is.

Laramie Briscoe is an author that I started reading by chance but continue to read because I know I will get a great book out of her; one that will have me going back for seconds, thirds, fourths, oh he!! will have me going back to read whatever it is she plans to write because she has cemented me as a fan for life. Like I said you don’t have to read the Heaven Hill series first, but if you want a little more background on the characters and get some glimpses of Cash himself in those books I think you will see why I keep coming back for more.

Lauded by the publisher for its contribution to understanding "the current crisis" in the former Yugoslavia, this tale of moral failure takes place at some undefined point during the Ottoman occupation of Muslim Bosnia. It was a bestseller when published in Yugoslavia in 1966, but it seems probable that its popularity lay more in its portrayal of a Yugoslavia oppressed than in any intrinsic artistry. Ahmed, the dervish of the title, has lived in religious seclusion for most of his life; his searching, self-centered and at times deranged internal dialogue constitutes most of this lengthy narrative. Selimovic (The Island; The Fortress) portrays a man hopelessly out of touch with himself and others, viciously in need of being right, secretly coveting power for himself. Groveling before authority, he knowingly betrays innocent people, yet rationalizes everything with perverted interpretations of the Koran. His brother's death, towards the beginning of the novel, and the near-destruction of the community's purest and most generous soul, by the end, enclose a tortuous psychological exposition of the perils of delusion and the ease with which fear destroys the most unyielding moral good. It is a probing portrait containing some valuable insights, yet with a character as insipid as Ahmed, it is hard to really care.

Death And The Dervish ($39.95; paper $15.95; Aug. 1996; 480 pp.; 0-8101-1296-5; paper 0-8101-1297-3): A famous novel, originally published in 1966 in Yugoslavia, by an eminent Bosnian author who died (in 1982) before completing the trilogy it was intended to initiate. It's the strange, legendlike story, set in an indeterminate past that appears to be the 18th century, of a Muslim sheikh (or dervish) whose brother is arrested and presumably executed by occupying Turkish rulers. Sheikh Ahmed Nurudin thereafter dedicates his life to destroying the ``government'' that took his brother from him--and in so doing sets in motion a maelstrom of deception and revenge that causes him to betray his closest friend and, ultimately, ruins his own life. A slow, digressive, tortuous novel that generates enormous power--worthy of comparison with Selimovi's great countryman and forerunner Ivo Andric. This historical novel set in Ottoman Bosnia is a masterpiece. Despite the fact that the psychological analysis is sometimes heavy, overall it is still a very dynamic thriller. It is as well a great book to understand the internal conflicts of the Bosnian society, between the east and the west that they were caught.

Wan Keeper of a Pale Flame

Imagine that all things remotely resembling justice flees your homeland. Imagine fair play becomes a faint dream of lost centuries; a spiritual aspiration carried aloft as low flame into the ever-present darkness. What if tending the flame became your inescapable duty? What if you alone held the last bit of light amidst bottomless evil?

And what of your loved ones? What if they were carried off into hopeless incarceration for the merest whiff of fortuitous knowledge obtained by proximity, not involvement? If you lived in a place wholly unacquainted with anything resembling justice, if all was pervasively corrupt, diffident autocracy, could you, would you be . . .Courageous? Ethical?

Forgiving? Would you carry The Flame?

What if tables turned and you suddenly, inexplicably were granted powers you assumed would always you? How would you use them?
"Death and the Dervish" takes place in 17th century Bosnia amidst the cruel, clumsy colonialism of an Ottoman "kasaba," a provincial outpost of enervated empire. The story's events occur in the ethical vacuum invariably created by over-extended empires.

Not enough has been said about the beauty of Sheikh Ahmed, light of this sensitive novel and the wan keeper of a pale flame. His character is articulated beautifully, full of the sincereity (and sorrow) born of a Muslim education, Sufi training, and worldly experience. The Sheikh endures the greatest of human tests; unanticipated access to power after horrendous humiliation. The price exacted this power is ultimate, but his inner contest is affirmingly universal.

The Sheikh is finest when facing the neglected avenue of public expression, a thing unknown to his lethargic townfolk. The moment at the mosque after the Sheikh's brother is known to be murdered is a stunning, close examination of human conscience and its furious power. Sheikh Ahmed's struggle is a persistent dialogue with his higher self, as he conducts internal arguments thtat will aloow expression of the deep outrage he shares with those around him. Unlike the others, the Sheikh neither deflects nor suborns when facing the exertions of tyranny.

Should you wish to find an exquisitely written (and translated) book, a moving story that portrays Muslim belief as humane and enlightening, this book is a excellent portrayal of a man's struggle for justice; the struggle for the Lit Flame. "Death and the Dervish" broadens our understanding of what is actually not foreign. . . because the book's Muslim characters are European and are as such, are keenly aware of the Christian West and its ways.

I remain deeply attached to Sheikh Ahmed, missing the weight of his inner beauty. Author Mesa Selimovic successfully reached into the stream of human consciousness to find a good man caught in horrific circumstances. As the Sheik moves forward to face the temptation of power and the seduction of revenge, we are treated to a subtle portrayal of an artfully-drawn psyche and its lonely power.There but for grace . . .
