About the Author
Gareth Jones, Texas A & M University Gareth Jones is a professor in the management department of the College of Business Administration and the Graduate School of Business and Texas A&M University. He is co-author on three other major textbooks, including one on organizational behavior (accolades he shares with CONTEMPORARY MANAGEMENT co-author and wife, Jennifer George), one on organizational theory, and a one on strategic management. Jones received his BA & PhD from University of Lancaster, UK. He has taught at University Warwick, Michigan State University, and University of Illinois/ Urbana-Champaign
Jennifer George is a well-published professor as is now the Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Management in the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. She is co-author of the aforementioned organizational behavior book. She received her BA from Wesleyan University and her MBA & PhD from New York University.

Contemporary Management

The book is good for class. It is a decent book for its subject. The book is a little drab, but in my case not as drab as the professor I had teaching it. Its around $200 and it so far, honestly has not been worth it. Maybe worth about half of that. I plan on selling it back. I do not believe its worth keeping, unlike some of my other textbooks...

No Special Info and Incredibly Expensive

The most distinguishing feature of Contemporary Management is its cost. My son just graduated college and I am finishing up my degree in leadership so I realize textbooks are on the expensive side. However, this one sets a new bar in high prices. You might then wonder if this book provides esoteric knowledge never before seen anywhere else, perhaps some sort of special how-to-manage details that are the make it or break it key to life.
It simply is not true.
You learn about all the standard historical information that is seen in every other management book I've gone through. Max Weber and his bureaucracy theories. Henri Fayol. The Hawthorne Studies. However, if anything, important aspects of these backgrounds that are mentioned in other books aren't brought up here, so if anything this book is *missing* information. Four pages on Fayol and not one mention of the bridge?
The same is true in various areas of the book. There are big pictures taking up space that have little information to convey - and graphics which seem more fluff than useful illustrations of the concept. A list of steps might be given here, where other books explained more clearly why the steps were important.
Finally - and this is a really bizarre comment that I don't think I've ever had to make before in a book review - the pages are almost sticky! They do not turn well and feel extremely flimsy. This means when studying for a test or doing other time sensitive material you get frustrated trying to turn the pages or move through them. Especially given the price they're charging for this, that makes no sense at all.
Yes, much of the information is solid. They cover ethics. They cover training. They cover motivation and performance. But none of this is new. I've seen these topics covered ten different ways in ten different other books in my other courses. I simply feel this book doesn't cover the material any better (and in some cases even as well) as other books out there - is incredibly expensive - and is physically not easy to use.
I had gone into this review preparing to give the book three stars for at least being reasonably good, but after going through all of that I am dropping my rating to two stars. There are numerous other options out there to learn the same material. I would go with one of those.
