About the Author
Dr. Susie H. VanHuss is a distinguished professor emeritus of the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. She received her B.S. degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and her M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. Her teaching specialties include business communications, administrative systems, and personnel management. She is a prolific author (Cengage Learning), with textbooks in communications, keyboarding and word processing, office technology, and administrative management. Dr. VanHuss has experience managing large foundations and has served on the board of trustees of numerous for-profit and non-profit organizations. She is a frequent speaker at state, regional, and national business education conventions and has done extensive consulting and training for industry and education groups nationally and internationally.

Dr. Connie M. Forde is a full professor and head of the Department of Instructional Systems and Workforce Development at Mississippi State University, where she leads undergraduate programs in information technology services, business technology teacher education, and industrial technology, as well as graduate programs in instructional technology. Dr. Forde also continues to advise doctoral students on their dissertation research. Prior to her tenure at Mississippi State University, she was a business teacher at both the community college and secondary levels. She earned her B.S. and M.Ed. degrees in business education from the University of Southern Mississippi and her Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Forde serves as coauthor of the COLLEGE KEYBOARDING series and a variety of word processing and integrated applications textbooks and simulations. She is a recognized contributor to the professional literature and a speaker at state, regional, and national conferences. Additionally, she has served as president of the National Business Education Association, Southern Business Education Association, and National Council of Pi Omega Pi, and chair of the Foundation for the Future of Business Education.

Donna L. Woo is an instructor and department coordinator for Information Systems/Office Automation at Cypress College and associate director of education at Pacific College. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in business education from Michigan State University and earned her Ed.D. from Nova University. Her industry experience includes work for both IBM and General Motors. A respected author, Dr. Woo has written several word processing textbooks and has served as a coauthor on several editions of South-Western COLLEGE KEYBOARDING textbooks.

Vicki Robertson received her M.S. and B.S. degrees in education from the University of Memphis. She currently teaches at the University of Memphis and online for Southwest Community College. She is a member of the National Business Education Association and Southern Business Education Association, and she has served on the executive board for the Tennessee Business Education Association.

You Must love keyboarding

If your professor uses this with cengagebrain you need to buy Microsoft Word 13 for 1-55 or higher $$-$$$, the book $$$, and if you rent the book you still have to buy a product code for a mere $60. The three credt course ends up costing you about $600.00. The book is so not telling you that you that rental and permissions are for six months when the class is for four months, so they justify the cost of the rental because they only have a 6 month rental agreement. The book works hand in hand with one online site from what I have seen and makes it easy for the instructor to get your work. The online rental products do not come with a key code, but they do require you to have a key code for cengagebrain. Other online classes and book don't require such a set up or if they do the cost is 1/2 as much as what I had to pay to get this book in service. The book supports the class objectives so if you have to have this book compare the cost of owning it against renting it and the additional cost of upgrading your software to run the keyboarding progam setup.

Keyboarding and Work Processing Essentials

The book is a great shape. It does explaining a lot of basic keyboarding and tips unfortunately I wasn't informed by the teacher until after that I needed the CD with the access code to be able to use it for class. I was able to save some money by buying this book and the code separately but I wish I would have been informed before. The seller is great and fast.

Tamer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business and economics from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. He earned his MBA and PhD degrees in business from the University of Wisconsin.

Gary is ranked in the top five percent of scholars who have published in the Journal of International Business Studies since 1995, based on the number of articles published. He recently was ranked one of the top 10 scholars in the United States, and top 15 worldwide, in international business research impact based on Google Scholar citation data. He is on the editorial review boards of several international journals. He has provided expert testimony on global commerce and small business to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Gary is Chair of the Academy of International Business, Western United States Chapter. Prior to joining academia, he was Export Manager of a medium-sized enterprise, directing the firm’s operations in Canada, Europe, Japan, and Mexico and supervising some 50 distributors. He enjoyed a brief career in banking and as a teacher inJapan.

Gary earned his MBA at the University of Washington and PhD at Michigan State University, both in international business. Earlier degrees were in finance and modern languages. He also attended the University of Paris in France and Sophia University in Japan and is fluent in French, Japanese, and Spanish.

Professor Riesenberger’s teaching activities centered on leadership and global project management at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Corporate Learning Group. John is an accomplished author, consultant, and international executive with senior executive positions in major pharmaceutical firms, biotechnology firms, and pharmaceutical agencies. John’s international business career spans over more than three decades in the global pharmaceutical industry. He has conducted business transactions in twenty-one countries.

Currently, he also serves as the president of Consilium Partners, Inc., a pharmaceutical consulting firm with clients in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical agency firms. He worked for 30 years with Pharmacia & Upjohn and The Upjohn Company as a senior international executive. His experience covered a diverse range of divisional, geographic, and functional accountabilities. His most recent position was as Vice President of Global Business Management. He also served as Corporate Vice President and Chief Commercialization Officer for a biotechnology firm and as the Executive Vice President of a pharmaceutical science agency.

John serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.He was a member of the Global Advisory Board of the American Marketing Association. He served as an Executive in Residence at the Michigan State University Center for International Business Education and Research. He served on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of International Marketing. He served as Chairman of the Industry Advisory Board’s “Value of Marketing Program,” SEI Center for the Advanced Studies in Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is the former chairman of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association Marketing Practices Committee. Professor Riesenberger is the coauthor, with Robert T. Moran, of The Global Challenge: Building the New Worldwide Enterprise (McGraw-Hill, London).

I was afraid to write too much for fear people wouldn't stop to read it.� Wow. There was so much more than I expected in this book. I have looked for years for solid answers about applying for jobs. This situation is made worse because of all the questionable information online…what’s good? What’s not?

�Well this book definitely sets the record straight. What immediately stands out is the book says everything I know I'm supposed to say…it just says it better than I could in any of my attempts. The sections on emotions and confidence are so original and so powerful, it almost falls in the category of “I gotta see it to believe it.” It literally changed how I see the world.

�I know that people like to throw out book suggestions to make themselves seem really smart or interesting, but this book stands out because it explains so many things in an easy to read way that really makes sense. A tool rather than airy bland bullet points from some random website on what you “ought” to do.

I am a Career Services Professional…this book is a 10/10.

Based on all of the online ‘hype’, I took a chance and picked up a copy of this book. Being out of work, I had already applied to a couple of jobs, but I was getting no responses. Like zero. Following the book’s suggestion, the first thing I did was ‘borrow’ a couple of thank-you note examples and sent them off. And the very next day I get a call to interview, and I’m like “what the…”

Even with a B.S. degree in Social Work and years of experience helping countless others with job placement, I felt totally frazzled now being the one having to ‘go out there’ and get a job. Day one, I receive the book in the mail and its paid off within 24-hours. So on Wednesday I went in to my interview, and fortunately I studied the Q&A and negotiating salary section…that saved me when the subject turned to money. He asks, “how much did you get paid at your last job?” and I responded with exact same answer I memorized straight out of the book and not only did I avoid that classic trap, I actually ended up bumping up my hourly.

Yesterday (Thursday) I received my job offer. Started working today :) Thank you Hans, your book got me hired.

AMAZING... IT WORKS!!

It Is with great pleasure that I put my voice on paper! After spending many years working in an entry level position, working hard with no reward in return, it was like I showed up, clocked in, and clocked out, without my presence being felt or heard. I wanted more. I wanted a career but my confidence had been stepped all over for so many years! my boyfriend had read this book and was amazed! He strongly encouraged me to read this book and after reading it, he said my life would change drastically, and it did! An Administration position opened up, now never in a million years would I have ever applied, however after studying Hans's material, I realized that I have been settling for so many years and that I deserve more, to be heard, I deserve to install my voice in the professional world. I followed all the steps that the book talked about, and you know what? One morning I woke up and was a new person, I felt like I was a BOSS!! I felt that no matter what, I would be able to succeed and my mental state took its path that led me to obtain a career that not only pays me WAY more than what I was paid before, but has led me to be recognized by all my colleagues and most importantly I have left an imprint into our company's values and objectives. I now have a stable and promising career as a Workflow Analyst at a major hospital in California!
I highly recommend this book "Interview Like A Boss" to anybody who strives for success and more importantly to those who struggle to live life due to obstacles that have been placed before them!

Great collection featuring poems by a range of favorite writers

I've always been intrigued by the sestina, the poetry form that spirals around itself. And I've always admired writers who take up the challenge of writing them. This is a great collection of them. As an anthologist myself, I am most impressed with Daniel Nester's job of creating a perfectly eclectic compendium, with such a great range of authors - Auden, Bishop, Ashberry, along with contemporary writers Steve Almond, Rachel Shukert, Sherman Alexie...Ravi Shankar! - and a broad array of subjects from mother worries to noodles to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There are even two graphic/comic sestinas, by Casey Camp and Matt Madden. Really fun to read - and learn from.

Rewarding, Enjoyable, and Entertaining Anthology

Overall, I have enjoyed this collection and highly recommend it to anyone attracted to this unique form. The Sestina has experienced a modern revival. It is intriguing that this form has attracted poets whose approaches to poetry otherwise differ. Both traditionalists and modernists have found the sestina congenial. The editor, Daniel Nester, is a sestina enthusiast, just like there are sonnet enthusiasts, or haiku enthusiasts, and it shows in the exuberant, and informative introduction.

Though I enjoyed reading the collection, there are a few drawbacks. First, the anthology covers a narrow period; it is a modern collection. I would have been interested in reading sestina from older sources to contrast how past poets have handled the sestina with how poets handle it today. Second, there are too many sestinas on the topic of the sestina; this gets tiresome to me. I just didn’t find them very interesting.

Third, a significant number of the sestinas consistently use radical enjambment to the extent that the end-words lose their significance. Although you can observe them on paper, when you read them aloud they have lost their function as markers of the form. In a way, that’s not a criticism of the anthology as radical enjambment is widely used today. One function of an anthology is to report what poets are doing in a particular form and it appears that a significant number of poets are applying radical enjambment to the sestina. Still, I found such usage discouraging as the effect of such usage is to mask the particular effect that the sestina can impart.

On the plus side, there are a number of humorous sestina, such as Ashbery’s "Farm Implements and Rutabagas in a Landscape", and Jonah Winter’s "Sestina: Bob", which is absolutely hilarious. And there are some experiments in the sestina which I found attractive; for example Geoff Bouvier’s "Refining Sestina" works in a kind of musical way. There are other sestina based experiments such as double sestina and others; some work, some don’t. But it is a sign of active engagement with a form that poets play with it, engendering new configurations.

Finally, there are a number of sestinas that use the form skillfully and with emotional impact such as Anthony Hecht, Weldon Kees, Donald Justice, and Elizabeth Bishop. If you are attracted to the sestina you will enjoy this collection. If you want to learn what modern poets are doing with this form, this is an excellent place to start.

Modern Poetry for All Readers

While a portion of modern poetry confuses many readers with obscurity or use of random-generating techniques, the poems in this book are based upon the medieval sestina, a complex form that makes many demands on its composer. Six words must be assorted throughout six stanzas (plus one envoi) in a particular manner. This collection demonstrates the applicability of the form to any topic. Some are narratives, others are full of word play, while a few rage against inhumanity. Two are comics, and a few are double sestinas. While several poems address the topic of sestinas, they have different intentions. To complain about such similarity is like complaining there are too many songs about love.

Those who keep their modern poetry reading to Collins or Olds will find much to enjoy here. The sestina invites application of plain language. Consider these opening lines: Tonto is white; You're crazy if you called this an affair; For attention upon arrival, appear naked. The subjects also tend toward the quotidian: rock bands, roller boarding, celebrities. The emotional tones range from risible to mournful, and the wisdom in some worth a volume of philosophy.

For the serious and knowledgeable reader of poetry are deeper riches. Ashberry's entry is about Popeye--or is it? Kent Johnson's references to the New York School and a painting called "Tangerines" is hilarious to those in the know. Repeat readings reveal the word play created to fit the scheme. And just how did Star Black manage a double sestina concerning Tonto, in which each stanza creates an identical arrow shape? Even flarf may be found here. Enjoy!
