Great collection featuring poems by a range of favorite writers

I've always been intrigued by the sestina, the poetry form that spirals around itself. And I've always admired writers who take up the challenge of writing them. This is a great collection of them. As an anthologist myself, I am most impressed with Daniel Nester's job of creating a perfectly eclectic compendium, with such a great range of authors - Auden, Bishop, Ashberry, along with contemporary writers Steve Almond, Rachel Shukert, Sherman Alexie...Ravi Shankar! - and a broad array of subjects from mother worries to noodles to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There are even two graphic/comic sestinas, by Casey Camp and Matt Madden. Really fun to read - and learn from.

Rewarding, Enjoyable, and Entertaining Anthology

Overall, I have enjoyed this collection and highly recommend it to anyone attracted to this unique form. The Sestina has experienced a modern revival. It is intriguing that this form has attracted poets whose approaches to poetry otherwise differ. Both traditionalists and modernists have found the sestina congenial. The editor, Daniel Nester, is a sestina enthusiast, just like there are sonnet enthusiasts, or haiku enthusiasts, and it shows in the exuberant, and informative introduction.
Though I enjoyed reading the collection, there are a few drawbacks. First, the anthology covers a narrow period; it is a modern collection. I would have been interested in reading sestina from older sources to contrast how past poets have handled the sestina with how poets handle it today. Second, there are too many sestinas on the topic of the sestina; this gets tiresome to me. I just didn’t find them very interesting.
Third, a significant number of the sestinas consistently use radical enjambment to the extent that the end-words lose their significance. Although you can observe them on paper, when you read them aloud they have lost their function as markers of the form. In a way, that’s not a criticism of the anthology as radical enjambment is widely used today. One function of an anthology is to report what poets are doing in a particular form and it appears that a significant number of poets are applying radical enjambment to the sestina. Still, I found such usage discouraging as the effect of such usage is to mask the particular effect that the sestina can impart.
On the plus side, there are a number of humorous sestina, such as Ashbery’s "Farm Implements and Rutabagas in a Landscape", and Jonah Winter’s "Sestina: Bob", which is absolutely hilarious. And there are some experiments in the sestina which I found attractive; for example Geoff Bouvier’s "Refining Sestina" works in a kind of musical way. There are other sestina based experiments such as double sestina and others; some work, some don’t. But it is a sign of active engagement with a form that poets play with it, engendering new configurations.
Finally, there are a number of sestinas that use the form skillfully and with emotional impact such as Anthony Hecht, Weldon Kees, Donald Justice, and Elizabeth Bishop. If you are attracted to the sestina you will enjoy this collection. If you want to learn what modern poets are doing with this form, this is an excellent place to start.

Modern Poetry for All Readers

While a portion of modern poetry confuses many readers with obscurity or use of random-generating techniques, the poems in this book are based upon the medieval sestina, a complex form that makes many demands on its composer. Six words must be assorted throughout six stanzas (plus one envoi) in a particular manner. This collection demonstrates the applicability of the form to any topic. Some are narratives, others are full of word play, while a few rage against inhumanity. Two are comics, and a few are double sestinas. While several poems address the topic of sestinas, they have different intentions. To complain about such similarity is like complaining there are too many songs about love.
Those who keep their modern poetry reading to Collins or Olds will find much to enjoy here. The sestina invites application of plain language. Consider these opening lines: Tonto is white; You're crazy if you called this an affair; For attention upon arrival, appear naked. The subjects also tend toward the quotidian: rock bands, roller boarding, celebrities. The emotional tones range from risible to mournful, and the wisdom in some worth a volume of philosophy.
For the serious and knowledgeable reader of poetry are deeper riches. Ashberry's entry is about Popeye--or is it? Kent Johnson's references to the New York School and a painting called "Tangerines" is hilarious to those in the know. Repeat readings reveal the word play created to fit the scheme. And just how did Star Black manage a double sestina concerning Tonto, in which each stanza creates an identical arrow shape? Even flarf may be found here. Enjoy!
