A handy reference guide for home and office.

As I recall I received my first "World Almanac and Book of Facts" as a Christmas gift when I was a teenager in the late 1960's. These days most folks rely on the internet to search for information but I like to have a hard copy of this book available for quick references. Every few years I purchase a new edition because geography, science and technology are changing at such breakneck speed. I also appreciate having this around when discussing sports, politics and music with friends and family. One of my favorite features continues to be "The Year in Pictures" which features a terrific mix of color photos from around the world. Because so much information is crammed into this volume the print is extremely small which is annoying but unavoidable.

Having said that the information in "The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2016" is presented in language that readers of all ages can readily understand. Indeed, I find there is still a place for a book like this in our home. I keep my copy right beside my recliner so I can access it when needed. In my view "The World Almanac and Book of Facts" seems to get better and better with each passing year. As has been the case for decades this book makes for a great stocking stuffer at Christmas time. Highly recommended!

Stats and interesting info every year!

This is one of my traditional Christmas presents to my father every year. This is a book that never gets old. It provides all of the stats and statistics of the world that you could think of. The year in review section is an excellent overview of the entire prior year (2015 in this case). It gives population and demographics information. My fathers favorite is the sports section which goes through all the records and different sports stats. He also enjoys the financial and world economies. This book is a great tradition, and while I may buy my father many other Christmas presents, I always know that this one will be the sure fire bet that he will read until the next year comes

An annual must-have! As mentioned in my previous reviews, I've been getting this publication every year for nearly forty years now, and my dad bought for years before that. It the perfect size, filled with interesting, fascinating, and other essential information.

Can find all the same info online

Just research 811 food combining and you get this info for free. The price for this is outrageous! I would honestly only pay $4.00 at the most for this. It is not a book. It has 5 laminated pages with simple info. Im totally bummed i spent my money on this:(

Excellent manual for Windows Server 2008

Stanek's books are my go-to resources for learning new technologies. Whenever Microsoft releases a new product I look to see if he has a book on it so when Microsoft finally released Windows Server 2008 I was happy to see he'd written not only one book but two: Windows Server 2008 Administrator's Pocket Consultant and Windows Server 2008 Inside Out. I ordered both and have been using the pocket consultant for several weeks now.

Windows Server 2008 Administrator's Pocket Consultant zeroes in on core support and administrative tasks. The book is focused and precise, covering in 650 pages more than most books do in 800 or 900 pages. I've learned a lot and every section clears up something or gives expert insights in ways I wouldn't have thought of myself.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone upgrading from previous versions and any current administrators. For day to day work it can't be beat. Great work, William!

A daily answers guide to R1 and R2

Stanek is the best of the best in computer writing for a reason. He's both a professional writer and one of thew few technical gurus Microsoft looks to. Thanks to one of Stanek's other books, I lead our deployment of Windows Server 2008 the first time. Now we're preparing for R2, I did my homework again and again chose one of his books to help me -- this one.

This book, Windows Server 2008 Administrators Pocket Consultant Second Edition, covers the R1 and R2 releases of Windows Server 2008. I found it had a good balance of both step by steps and expanded details. There are many new features in R2 and this one covers most of them and in sufficient enough depth. Whether you are working with R1 only or with both R1+R2, I can't see how you can go wrong with this one.

Detailed, readable, clear. Strongly recommended.

Firstly, I almost never write online reviews. Take that as how strongly I feel about the value of this book.

I have been an Information Technology program and project manager for decades in the Financial industry, and can say that I've learned most of the tricks of the trade in that time. I've seen a lot of complex and difficult projects to a successful conclusion, and so I have a good idea of what is needed in order to achieve the goal.

I came across a university library e-book version of this excellent compilation while looking for a competence model for the Program Manager role. I wanted something detailed for my reference, and easy enough read that I could give it to a non-project team that needed understand what they were getting into when starting up a multi-year program. The book is collectively authored, each chapter written independently by well educated and articulate individuals, and is very clearly written in a way that is digestible not only to the project professional but by the end-user also.

This book has everything I was looking for in terms of the Program Manager role competencies, and each of the other chapters I have read have been equally good. I'm probably going to buy a hard copy of this to keep on hand for reference.

Good training to prep for a Zoo breakout

A real page turner!!!! Couldn't put it down as I sat in my bunker, counting ammo and canning food. I have a suspicion that this book is a cover for some kind of Bigfoot capture op, but not sure. Interesting how the East German team took a lunch break in the middle of the competition - must be due to the lack of an incentive system. Sad to read about how the wife of one of the competitors was making fun of the shooting skills of her man and made the comments to another competitor...............I've been there, but on the other side - the pain is the same.

This book is quick read, I found this it informative and exciting. As a hunter and long range enthusiast, the idea of this challenge is very appealing. I felt like a participant as I read the narrative and looked at the pictures. The photos were amazing for detail on the tools of the trade and for capturing the incredible terrain. For anyone interested in long range shooting, I highly recommend this book. I would give this 6 stars if Amazon would let me.

A true delight written by a true professional.

Vowinkel really knows his stuff. I was transported back to my glory days of working with my RGR BN Sniper Teams. It helped that this book is loaded with great pictures that puts me in the field with the competitors. However, this is not a book for the Yahoo-Rambos out there. The author has too much respect for the competition, tools of the trade, safety, and people involved for that and it comes through in this book. A true delight written by a true professional.

Does its job well

The twenty-first century has rightfully been called the "age of biology", and draws on the laboratory techniques developed in the last half of the twentieth century. The advent of commercial products, medicines, and foodstuffs using the techniques of genetic engineering has resulted in an explosion of books and monographs that attempt, and usually succeed, in explaining these techniques to students and also to those curious about them. Compared to most of these books, this one gives a fairly rapid overview of the subject of genetic analysis and genetic engineering, but one can still gain a deep appreciation of the subject by its study. Many useful diagrams appear in the book, and the author gives useful summaries at the beginning of each chapter. This reviewer only read the last three chapters of the book, so this review will be confined to these.

The genetic engineering of plants is covered in chapter 11 of this book. This has become a very contentious topic of late, due to the perceived dangers of genetically modified crops. The author recommends, rightfully, that the potentially adverse side effects of these crops should be studied via careful experimentation. Genetically modified crops have been a contentious issue in the last few years, and the debate concerning their use and consumption has reached a level of vitriol that goes beyond all measurable bounds. This chapter puts the subject on a clear scientific foundation and readers who are interested in genuine scientific understanding of the genetic engineering of plants will benefit greatly from its perusal.

Why is it so difficult to get a foreign gene to be expressed in a mammalian cell in which it is inserted? This question is of great interest in biotechnology and is discussed in chapter 12 of the book. Another one of the more interesting topics in this chapter regards the existence of `immortalized' cells, which continue to divide even after being cultured. Two examples are mentioned, the HeLa cells derived from a woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951, and Chinese hamster ovary cells. Programmed cell death or `apoptosis' has been the subject of intense research in recent years, due to its importance in the curing of cancer. The author emphasizes the extreme difficulties involved in obtaining stable transfection in animal cell lines, and discusses several methods to make it more efficient.

The author continues the discussion of the genetic engineering of animals in chapter 13, after first reviewing some elementary embryology. This chapter is of particular interest to those readers who are interested in understanding the science behind stem cell research. First discussed is the production of transgenic animals using pronuclear injection. The author points out some of the consequences of this technique brought out by experiments with laboratory mice. One of these is the high concentration of growth hormone mRNA in their livers and growth hormone in their serum, resulting in mice of considerable larger size than their non-transgenic counterparts. The author lists some of the disadvantages in the technique, such as its inability to do gene knock-out, the difficulty in controlling the expression of the transgene, the fact that the expression of the transgene is not strictly inherited, and the occasional creation of a "mosaic" animal, where the transgene only occurs in certain organs and tissues of the animal. The creation of mosaic animals has resulted in patentable technology in recent years, so this technique, in various guises, does have practical applications.

Embryonic stem cells, defined by the author as being undifferentiated cells that are isolated from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, are discussed next. Interestingly, embryonic stem cells can be maintained in culture indefinitely via cell divisions, and will remain undifferentiated as long as they grown at large distances from each other. The main advantage in using embryonic stem cells, according to the author, lies in their efficiency in homologous recombination. He points out though that non-homologous recombination does still occur, and to distinguish between cells that have integrated the DNA fragment homologously and those that have done so non-homologously, use is made of `ganciclovir', which after phosphorylation will result in inhibition of DNA polymerase activity. Cells that have undergone homologous integration will survive the ganciclovir treatment.

The author uses this discussion to motivate the concept of knock out genes, which he considers of extreme importance not only to the understanding of biology but also to the analysis of human disease. There are three classes of knock-outs depending on whether they are lethal to the organism, or either change its phenotype or not. The author also discusses the existence of `conditional' knock-outs, where there is no observable phenotype but arise when genes are acting in parallel pathways and consequently compensate for each other's functions. He also points out that knockout experiments take a considerable amount of time and are very expensive, but this will no doubt change in the upcoming years.

Nuclear transfer, certainly the most well known of the techniques in genetic engineering, is also discussed in this chapter. The cloning of mammals, via the transfer of cells from an embryo and fusing them with enucleated eggs, such as was done with sheep, is discussed in fair detail. The author points out the difficulties in producing viable offspring using nuclear transfer from differentiated adult cells. These include the inefficiency of the technique, abnormal offspring, telomere shortening and consequent shortening of life spans. Although cloning of other farm and domestic has been done successfully, the author exhibits justified caution in the cloning of human beings. However, if and when cloning can be shown to be a viable and safe technique for human asexual reproduction, it should definitely be an option for those individuals who have chosen it as their best method for reproduction.

I was surprised how detailed, yet clear the book is. The chapters are organized in such a way that you can build-up your understanding of modern molecular lab techniques as you read through. It is certainly a must for those who are just beginning their lab research or are near the end of their undergrad bio degree.

Excellent Detail for Post-grads

This book is a step beyond a basic molecular biology handbook. In addition to re-covering molecular basics, the author goes into more detail on how processes work. For example, instead of merely describing restriction enzymes, the author gives the background, naming convention, troubleshooting, and full applications of the enzymes. The information given is presented perfectly for a post graduate beginning their career in molecular biology.

The diagrams and tables of the book are also very helpful and clearly drawn.
