ORACLE PERFORMANCE TROUBLESHOOTING is quite a bit different than other books in this genre. The authors recognize that there isn't one perfect method that can solve all of your performance or other technical problems. Thus, hiring somebody who is an Oracle Certified Professional doesn't really mean very much. The authors call these newbies, "Oracle Certified Beginners." Like the authors, I also have discovered that applicants with an OCP credential are frequently not competent at all.

I especially liked the way the authors presented various case studies. After all, most of us learn to be good troubleshooters and performance tuners by working on actual problems. Probably none of us became excellent at what we do just by reading a book--and certainly not by just taking a test.

Some parts of this book are really funny. The authors quite correctly point out that management often looks for a "silver bullet," which never (or at least, rarely), actually exists. In my experience, many technical problems are indeed not even technical in nature, but problems brought about because of incompetent DBAs or other professionals. I agree with the authors when they say that management will often try to throw more resources at a problem (get more cpu's!), rather than actually finding the true root cause of the problem.

√ All in all, ORACLE PERFORMANCE TROUBLESHOOTING is a witty, insightful look at troubleshooting various issues in an Oracle database. It's true that some of the scripts may not be totally up to date, since some things have changed in the last few years, but I still think this is a very valuable book to read.

Do you like Penguins? Penguins can be very interesting. In Penguins there are lots of facts, some amazing facts are that some Penguins lay at lest 2 eggs and only one survives, a group of Penguins that live together is called a colony. There are 17 different species (kinds) of Penguins! The smallest Penguin is called the Fairy Penguin the biggest Penguin is the Emperor Penguin!
I like Penguins because it teaches me about their lives and what they look like. I love all of the Penguins because they are all unique and special.
I would recommend this book to people who like Penguins, animals, and facts!

About the Author
Dr Elliot Bendoly is an Associate Professor in Information Systems and Operations Management at Emory University's Goizueta Business School. Prior to academia he worked as a research engineer for the Intel Corporation. He holds a PhD from Indiana University in the fields of Operations Management and Decision Sciences, with an Information Systems specialization in ERP and Knowledge Management. His research has been published in a wide range of elite academic journals including the Journal of Operations Management, the Journal of Applied Psychology, Production and Operations Management, Information Systems Research and MIS Quarterly, among others (full vita at www.bizbreed.com). Dr Bendoly is also the co-editor of Strategic ERP Extension and Use (Stanford University Press, 2005) which complements the 2008 Cambridge University Press text catering to the ramp up of tool-developer skills and the integration of applications such as Map Point, XL State, and RiskOptimizer in Excel for decision support system creation. His current research focuses on operational issues in IT utilization and behavioral dynamics.

There are so many books on Excel and most proceed with a mechanical presentation of the software itself and not on the value added analytics potentials or processes. This is a book for the analyst, it focuses on the analytic processes to support decision makers by transforming data into meaningful, actionable information. It powerfully conveys the potential of Excel to enlighten management using the contextual information available to the organization. Let me repeat, this is a book for the professional who earns his or her bread as an analyst. Though it is Excel 2007 formulated, the focus on the analytic process makes it just as relevant for later versions of Excel.

Where was the humor

Maybe this just isn’t my type of book, but I couldn’t get past the first two chapters. I found it corney. The reviews said it was humorous. Great, if it were. But it wasn’t what I deem as humorous. I would call it "corney".

STEVE KEEN, I LOVE YOU

This was a brilliant book and I could not recommend it more highly. I am a non-economics student and I found the book to be a little dense in parts. With enough effort, however, I felt I could understand all the arguments he makes in the book and the concepts on which they rely. I am so glad I read it, because now I truly do have the intellectual weapons in my arsenal to take on free-market clerics and the pernicious ideologies of neoliberalism and right libertarianism. What utter tripe. Why doesn't Richard Dawkins spend his time refuting these religions, rather than mostly harmless ones involving magical people in the sky? These ones actually ruin the lives of millions of people, and pollute and poison our world (albeit indirectly).
Thank you Steve Keen, you legend!
And for those people who seriously believe that the 'free market' maximises social welfare, I would highly recommend that you read this book too. The fact that you came to accept this bizarre religion to begin with suggests that you have trouble with reasoning, but if you have just one rational bone in your body, you will come to recant this dogma as soon as you finish reading this tour de force.

Well worth the read

If you listen to the Fed chairman, the sage government and bank economists and the talking heads on CNN, you will never understand how the economy really works. Steve Keen systematically demolishes the underpinnings of neo-classical economic thought and shows them to be fallacious myths. The economy is dynamic system and rarely in equilibrium. Neo-classical theory is based on the economy being in equilibrium. It is no wonder then that economic bubbles and depressions come as a surprise to economists because they cannot happen according to their theories. (That is why they call them "exogenous" shocks.)

If other sciences (like physics, chemistry and even biology) based their theories similarly, we would still be living in the stone age. The wonder to me is that, even with the incompetent interference of the central banks and governments, the economy functions as well as has.

Dense but worth the effort

When the history books are written this guy will be acknowledged as the one who fixed the errors of Keynes and by his putative followers Krugman, Delong, Stiglitz, Summers etc. Speaking as an applied mathematician trained in non linear theoretical mechanics of fluids, I'm here to tell you there has been a revolution in most disciplines already driven by advances in non linear analysis. In Physics, quantum mechanics is the direct result of applying perturbation theory to linearizing the wave equation. More broadly, chaos theory is changing the way we look at ecosystems, climate, and yes, even economies. Ours wouldn't be the first civilization to collapse because we were bad at math. If we do blow it however, we'll be the first to almost get it right but then blew it anyway.
All I can say is Steve Keen is a real mensch, he does his math correctly, and many more of us smart guys need to support this guys approach to macroeconomics. No way are the old school math impaired poseurs like Krugman going to do it.

Great Insights but Awful Idiosyncrasies

For many years I have become convinced (independently) of the central theses of the book: that Greek discourse consists of intonation units (called colons), that they can be diagnosed by clitics and second position particles, and that they perform discourse functions (topicalization, etc.). Thus, it is to my great satisfaction to read a work that makes all these points in one convenient package and works out some of the details.

Notwithstanding the basic soundness of its overall thesis, the book is highly idiosyncratic in its formatting and choice of (generally decades old) scholarly dialog partners. Though Fraenkel has more or less stood the test of time, Dover has not, and it is unfortunate that Scheppers has chosen to build on Dover and his rather opaque notation as his main point of departure. Even more off-putting is Scheppers' use of a home-spun discourse theory, which is not really described in sufficient detail nor compared and contrasted with more common contemporary approaches.

As a result, it will be difficult for readers more conversant in contemporary linguistic approaches to Classical Greek to understand and integrate Schepper's work with their own. This is a shame since Schepper's basic insights are probably right.
