Great Insights but Awful Idiosyncrasies

For many years I have become convinced (independently) of the central theses of the book: that Greek discourse consists of intonation units (called colons), that they can be diagnosed by clitics and second position particles, and that they perform discourse functions (topicalization, etc.). Thus, it is to my great satisfaction to read a work that makes all these points in one convenient package and works out some of the details.
Notwithstanding the basic soundness of its overall thesis, the book is highly idiosyncratic in its formatting and choice of (generally decades old) scholarly dialog partners. Though Fraenkel has more or less stood the test of time, Dover has not, and it is unfortunate that Scheppers has chosen to build on Dover and his rather opaque notation as his main point of departure. Even more off-putting is Scheppers' use of a home-spun discourse theory, which is not really described in sufficient detail nor compared and contrasted with more common contemporary approaches.
As a result, it will be difficult for readers more conversant in contemporary linguistic approaches to Classical Greek to understand and integrate Schepper's work with their own. This is a shame since Schepper's basic insights are probably right.
