About the Author

Fernando Carbone

Fernando Carbone is the Director of the Forensic Technology Services practice in PwC Brazil, based in Sao Paulo, with more than 15 years of work experience divided between information security and computer forensics. He specializes in assisting companies in digital crime investigations, electronic discovery process, and litigation technical support. He has worked in the financial industry (Unibanco and Itau) for seven years, and has participated in investigation projects and computer forensics involving more than 100,000 assets. He was responsible for the creation of the incident response team at these institutions. He is currently a professor of the computer forensics postgraduation course at Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie and Impact Tecnologia. He is certified in EnCE, ACE, CHFI, CEH, Security+, CoBIT, ITIL, ISO 27002, and others. He has a Network Computers degree from Instituto Brasileiro de Tecnologia Avancada (IBTA), a postgraduate degree in Information Security, and a postgraduate degree in Project Management, both from IBTA. This is his first book.

A good book to get knowing FTK basic capabilties

Computer Forensics with FTK by Fernando Carbone book is my first read on the computer forensics science subject. Being not new to the computer and database programming frankly had always made me curious what happens with this wealth of data that travels through my laptop or sits somewhere without my knowledge. This book reveals some of this mystery, or at least promises to shed some light onto this aspect.

The book dedicates itself to one of a dozen or so forensic tools called FTK. FTK is proprietary software by AccessData and runs on a Windows OS only. FTK has seemingly gained a lot in popularity though in the public sector. Despite this fact many components of FTK are free so you must be able to play around with several major parts. FTK can also be freely downloaded.

The book is not terribly long, but if you are in a hurry it will cover nicely all the important aspects of conducting a forensic analysis. It is an easy read. The book has pictures so you would rarely need to put it down to play with the software.

After finishing reading this book I realized that FTK is quite comprehensive and a fairly complex tool. However, it promises to cover a typical forensic analysis in a professional manner. The author describes the process from the very basics to conducting a full fledged review that goes beyond a personal computer hard disk analysis to mobile phone or other devices with a report produced.

My favourite chapters were on Registry analysis and password guessing. Never knew this is so possible with FTK. Also its ability to gather evidence remotely blew my mind!

I generally recommend this book. Especially for novice in the field. FTK is also looking like a mature tool with many capabilities.

I am giving this book a 4 out of 5 rating. Mostly because this book is too short, reads as a manual than a problem solver and not covering the social media/public web activities evidence gathering, does not describe how to visualize the data and the very reporting is not covered in enough depth.

Excellent Guide to FTK

While I'm not an expert on FTK or Computer Forensics, I felt this book did an excellent job to guide me with setting up FTK and navigating my way around the interface while explaining the concepts clearly. I do agree with other reviewers about the book in regard to content, it could have gone more in depth and I would have gladly consumed more of my time reading about it. It's very interesting, and this has opened my eyes to exploring more unknown issues faced when working on sensitive infrastructure, I have an appreciation for the "data".

I downloaded FTK and it worked under Windows 8.1, it was a very large download and it took awhile, but it was well worth it. I would recommend this book to anyone who is starting out with FTK, if you are an advanced user this book would only serve as a reference to the GUI options. With my skill level it was a PERFECT introduction.

A practical book for the beginners

I recently had an opportunity for a small computer forensics project, I have been in IT field for very long time but my focus is mainly in Enterprise Software Architecture, so this field is still very new to me. This book provides a very practical entry point to get up to speed and allow me to have good presentation material/background in front of my clients. FTK and AccessData can be the right enterprise tools for you if you would like to spend more time on analyzing the alerts and leave the data collection to the tool/framework.

Recommend for Computer Forensics beginners.

Great for Parents on a Budget

Although there are more and more chartered and public schools using Montessori methods of teaching, most Montessori schools are private enterprises and must charge considerable tuition in order to stay open. If you are in favor of Montessori methods but are not able to send your child to a Montessori school, this is the book for you.
The author of this book gives a brief history of Maria Montessori and how she discovered how children learn. It then goes on to describe the methods used, and gives detailed instructions for all the exercises and demonstrations which are used with preschool-aged children.
The author also gives instructions for making many of the Montessori materials at home, with common household items or easy-to-obtain craft supplies. Throughout the book she offers many alternative suggestions for the materials which are typically used in a Montessori classroom. For instance, she mentions that a muffin tin can be used very effectively to sort buttons, and that a handtowel may be used for the workmat.
Although this book was orginally written in the 1960's, most of the information is still useful today. The cover mentions that it has been updated and revised, but it is not clear what information has been changed in this edition. Still, overall this book is a wonderful resource for frugal parents who are able to teach their children at home, and who want to use Montessori methods to do so.

Practical book for teaching the very young.

My mother was an educator who spent the first nine years of my life staying home with my sisters and me. My parents could not afford to send me to Montessori School. Instead, my mother constructed many of the materials described in the book and used them with me. Because of her efforts, I was reading phonetically at 4 in addition to being well prepared for 1st grade math. I remember fondly the time when we spent together with "school" and do not remember any insecurity or feelings of being pushed. I feel I have benefited from a lifetime a learning and self-confidence that has aided me in many of my endeavors.
When I became pregnant with twins, my mother purchased the new addition of this book for me. I work full time, but still have found time to make the materials in the book (they are very easy!). I enjoy spending time on the exercises with my girls, who are now two and a half . They also look forward to when he have "school".
As an introduction to the world of Montessori; this book has been an eye-opener to me. This book has shown me the beauty of the Montessori Method itself, so much so that my husband and I are considering placing our girls in a Montessori school when they get a little older.
I did find the index of toys and materials outdated, as hinted at by the below critic. Some of these toys are no longer manufactured. I find it sad, however, that the below critic finds teaching manners such as cleaning up after yourself outdated. My girls, at two and a half, enjoy watching me and my husband in the kitchen, helping us clean with their child-size brooms and mops, dusting, etc. I want my children to understand that they are a contributor to their own environment, and not to expect such things to be taken care of by maids or parents.

A well written and organized resource guide

I became interested in the Montessori method while researching different educational styles in order to prepare for what my family's options would be once our twin toddlers reach preschool age. After doing research on the internet, attending an open house at a Montessori preschool in our area, and reading "The Discovery of the Child" by Dr. Maria Montessori, I felt that I needed to find a book that I could use as a guide and would serve as a frame of reference for beginning to do activities with my children that are based on the Montessori approach. This book not only served as an excellent reference guide to how to use the Montessori method at home with your children, but it is well written, easy to follow, and well organized. I particularly like how each activity includes clear directions on how to carry out the activity, the materials needed for the activity, the purpose of the activity, and the learning objective for the activity. I also like how the author included a section on how to make a "prepared environment" for learning in your home, being that the "prepared environment" is one of the, if not the most, critical aspects of a Montessori education. This book is really helpful for someone like me who wants establish an early educational foundation for my children at home and see what suits their needs and personalities before the time comes for my husband and I to decide what will be the educational setting for our children's preschool and kindergarten years.

About the Author
Barbara Klug Redman, PhD, MBE, BSN, has been Dean and Professor, Wayne State University, College of Nursing since 1998. Her honors include Fellow in Medical Ethics, Harvard Medical School (1994-5), and Visiting Fellow Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University (1993-4). She was Executive Director, American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) from 1983-1989 and Executive Director, American Nurses Association/American Nurses Foundation from 1989-1994. She held the M. Adelaide Nutting Chair in Clinical Nursing, Johns Hopkins University from 1993-1995. Dr. Redman has received 17 funded research grants, published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has authored seven books, including "Practice of Patient Education: A Case Study Approach "(2006), "Advances in Patient Education" (2004), " Patient Self-Management of Chronic Disease: The Health Care Providers Challenges" (2003), and "Measurement Tools in Patient Education, 2nd edition" (2002). She was also Series Editor for eleven books in specialized areas of patient education (1981-1984), and she has served on the editorial boards of "Journal of Nursing Education, Journal of Professional Nursing", and "The Diabetes Educator, " and has reviewed for other major nursing journals. Dr. Redman consults nationally and presents internationally.

You don't have to be a Tolle fan...

...to appreciate and enjoy these CD's. There are two in the set. There is no religiosity in any of Eckhart Tolle's works - only a gently humorous and deeply compassionate spiritual teaching. He is not a guru, nor is he any kind of messiah - simply a good teacher and guide.

In this set - The Illusion of Time - he helps me to understand the true nature of time and what, for many of us, is an unhealthy misunderstanding of it. The basic premise is that we tend to live in the past and the future, while all that is ever happening is happening in the NOW. Very Buddhist, in a way, but richer, gentler and more humorous as far as I am concerned. Give it a try. Also, try his books. Those were my intro and I find them very helpful - The Power of Now and The New Earth are my faves.

Time and space are illusions and this 2 disk set helps us to better understand the concept of time. Which, byt the way, is a creation of mankind so that we have some sort of reference for our activities. Animals don't use time and don't need time. So, if you have time buy this audio set and listen to it.
