Unlike most introductory texts that take a topical approach to studying sociology, this smart, challenging, and accessibly written text looks at the core principles of the discipline, making links to a contemporary context.
Both students and instructors will find in these pages a fresh and original approach to teaching sociology. Beamish begins by providing a sociological profile of today's students, juxtaposing their collective biography against the current historical moment. He builds on this discussion by introducing Mills's concept of the sociological imagination and outlining a method for thinking sociologically; then, he uses Hitchcock's film Psycho to illustrate the difference between psychological and sociological analysis. Having established the usefulness of sociological thinking, Beamish moves back to the classical theorists, outlining in depth their important contributions to sociology. He concludes the book by applying concepts from the classical tradition to a sociological discussion of culture—ending with an analysis of Bob Dylan's artistry to illustrate how these concepts have an enduring quality in contemporary times.

Review
Overall, this book rates highly as an introduction to classic and contemporary social theory. It is engaging, accessible, and written in a lively and often humorous style. Highly recommended. (CHOICE)
The Promise of Sociology is an introduction to the discipline and an exercise in critical thinking and learning—Beamish comes through as a sociologist concerned with not only what students learn but also how they learn it. (Teaching Sociology)
Review
This is a lovely, highly focused, and interesting way to introduce students to sociology.... [It] is a serious introduction to sociology, but combines 'heavy' ideas with a number of 'light' and interesting ideas such as those drawn from the movie Psycho and singer Bob Dylan. The book will both challenge and be of great interest to introductory sociology students. (George Ritzer, University of Maryland)
Beamish has written an engaging introduction to sociology that is sweeping in its ambitions, scope, and delivery. He makes complex ideas understandable and grounded and he offers powerful insights into how the world is organized, why it is changing, and where students might fit with all of this. This is sociology as it should be introduced—gripping and elucidating. (Neil Guppy, University of British Columbia)
The Promise of Sociology is a fascinating intellectual journey into the quest of sociology that will fit my penultimate pedagogical goal of refreshing the deepest passion of my students in my senior capstone course. Even I was reinvigorated by the text, after 31 years teaching sociology in college or university settings. None of my own classes at the undergraduate or graduate levels ever presented a more compelling case for the classical tradition in sociology. Kudos to the author. (Henry Allen, Wheaton College)
